Is this legal?

I've been looking for an iPhone 3GS recently. I worked out my usage (very little) and Pay As You Go works out the cheapest and best value for me. Anyway, after visiting my local Carphone Warehouse today, they told me that they didn't have any in stock but that a store 12 miles away did. I trekked off and went to the other store, where they produced the iPhone I wanted took some details and started processing it. When I explained that I wanted the phone on PAYG, everything stopped. The manager explained that they could only sell these phones to contract customers - despite the fact that they advertise (at the till I was standing at!) that the phone is available on PAYG !
Now, if the phone was somehow different I could understand this, but the only difference is the sim card they sell me. Needless to say, I was fuming at having been discriminated against in this way and explained that a contract did not make financial sense to me because I'd be paying for calls I won't use (he was quite happy to sell me the phone on a contract there and then!).
Sorry for the rant, but I feel this is grossly unfair and discriminatory. Does anyone know if this practice is legal? Thanks

No its not illegal. They get sent PAYG stock and contract stock. If they've ran out they can't sell you the contract stock.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

I think your problem lies here:jimmydee1984 wrote: »I worked out my usage (very little) and Pay As You Go works out the cheapest and best value for me.
Phone shops make their cash from people signing up to over-priced contracts they don't need. How do you think they'd make a profit if everyone was like you (and me) and worked out their usage, only spending what they needed to or could afford?
