I used to live in the Yorkshire Dales i used to see adders every day, even caught a few and kept them in a box, they are common in grass they can be difficult to see unless its warm weather, then they go "sunbathing" and can be seen a lot. I bet it was a adder bite your cat will be ok though adders are not deadly
Sometimes people let corn snakes and king snakes out into the wild as they can't keep them anymore, although i doubt a cornsnake would attack your cat unless provoked, sure you cat hadn't eaten the snake as well? I think a kingsnake would have killed your cat, unless your cat was lucky and ran before it could crushit. I have a eastern diamondback by the way ... it wasn't one of my species or your cat would be in heaven nowHope it gets better.
Owed out = lots. :cool:0 -
My dog was bit by a snake a few years ago. And it was in my garden. She couldnt walk on her leg and it swelled up in a massive balloon. She had an injection and some tablets and it went down quite quickly.
But, it was a grass snake that did this. I spoke to a wildlife officer and he told me this. I said the usual "But grass snakes dont bite" and he replied "Oh yes they do". He reckons that the snake had laid eggs in my grass pile and the dog must have spotted it and got too close.
The vet thought it could have been an adder but the wildlife bloke said it wouldnt be an adder as they prefer woods and wouldnt be near my garden. (My garden backs onto the railway line).0 -
Two puncture holes, an adder. Grass snake would make more holes, more front teeth. Hope the cat is feeling better.0

My dog managed to get bitten by an adder when he was a puppy (well about 2!) by basically going to investigate it, before i could stop him. We took him straight to vets where he had tablets and an injection and we were told to keep a close eye on him for abit, but he was fine.
Im also in the Southwest, so we obviousy have some bad tempered adders here!0 -
I just wanted to update quickly... PetPlan have been slow in sending the claim money out, although the person on the phone seemed to think they were paying it.
It took about 5 days and a return visit for the leg to go down completely and there's still clearly two little wounds. I'm convinced it was a snake as a neighbour a few doors down has said he had a similar case with his cat.
Although I live in Reading and am I'm not sure it's a wildlife hot spot- so I'll never truely know.
XHIf you aim for the moon if you miss at least you will land among the stars!0 -
Adders seem to be getting more common. I have a rather wild garden in South Devon and I've seen them a lot this year.0

It sounds like a cat bite to me
Cat bites can cause abscesses but also things like cellulitis where the whole leg swells up and the infection travels along muscle and fatty planes up and down the way. If you can see 2 puncture wounds i'd doubt it was a snake as the ones we get in this country are pretty small and have really small and thin teeth. Just a thought

My cat has just been bitten by an adder (last week) and was just wondering what the outcome was? how long did it take for swelling to go down etc?
She was bitten on her face :-( thankfully the swelling has now gone down which has now made it apparent that it was a snake bite as the puncture wounds are now visable. Before we just thought she had eaten a wasp.
I have never seen swlling like it to be honest, she didnt loko anything like her, the swelling is only just starting to go down 5 days later.
And for whoever said that adder bites wont fatal they are like a bee sting, you forget that a bee sting can be fatal to a cat!!
Also, how did you get on for getting the money back through insurance? thanks x0
