Eon Problems ( Think they owe me money)

Right this is a long confusing one ...

I switched my gas from Eon to Scottish Gas in May and when they asked for a meter reading I was on holiday so they estimated 3021 when I got back from holiday I called and gave them a real meter reading but they said since I was changed from them already they couldnt accept it but as the bill was over £200 I argued and they said they changed it and would tell scottish gas. A few weeks ago I got a call from Scottish Gas saying that I was changing back to Eon and Id be charged for leaving their fixed price thing before the contract was up ( I was with Scottish Gas about 3 weeks) I said no I never wanted to change and they made a complaint about the transfer with Eon and sorted it out for me. Today I got another letter saying I was leaving Scottish Gas with a final bill so I called them and they sorted it out and cancelled the final bill but when I was on the phone the guy told me that their start reading for the gas was still 3021 estimated. I gave them a new meter reading( which is 2473) and they fixed it and asked if I had paid my final Eon bill which I have. Scottish gas now think that Eon owe me the money back because the bill was wrong in the first place but they insisted that they took my other meter reading in the first place and the bill was correct. I dont even know what my question is really I just wanted some advice as to where to go now? Do I have a reason to argue with them about it? I told them there was a problem in the first place as the most my gas bill has ever been was £80 over winter, this bill is £205 from Jan to May!

    Hi emmzy,

The first thing to do is to check if the final meter readings on your closing bill from E.ON match the start read your new supplier has opened your account from.

If they are not the same, ask your new supplier to raise an agreed read dispute (ARD) with E.ON.

This means that the two suppliers will agree a final and start reading and the account will be re-billed.

If the old E.ON account is left in credit, after the account has been corrected, this will be refunded to you.

    Hope this helps a bit.

    Hi,

Don't worry, get in touch with your new supplier with your up to date readings and ask them to raise an ARD.

They will send the reads over to E.ON and re-agree the final reading. This will enable E.ON to re-bill the old account correctly.

I totally sympathise. I had the same problem with switching from British Gas to E-on. To be fair BG had messed me around with other problems since moving into my new build flat in December 2005. I was finally ‘free’ to switch in May 2006 and it took until Winter 2007 to sort the meter readings out between BG and Eon. E-on to their credit were absolutely fantastic, they guided me through the whole meter reading dispute procedure with BG.

I was in the same situation as you were, with BG stating they had taken a meter reading which was totally bogus. I supplied the actual one about a week after the switch when I had come out of hospital to Eon and wasn’t prepared to pay BG for gas I hadn’t received from them. Eon were excellent, I always spoke to someone who did exactly what they said they would do, BG on the other hand did not give a monkey’s backside and even though a dispute was in progress started sending me debt collection and threatening letters. The main issue was that BG wasn't prepared to agree a meter reading with Eon even though a dispute had been raised.

It got to the point that I was prepared to gas myself to death just to make a point!

Eventually I found (by some fluke) someone in BG who wasn’t a complete and utter numpty and they agreed that 2 years of solid agro was probably enough for them to agree to wipe out the £70 debt that I supposedly owed. Since then I’ve had a blissful 18 months with Eon.

I know your problem is with Eon but I honestly think if you stick to your guns and write plenty of letters and make sure all the meter readings are correct you’ll get it sorted. I found that letters were the best way of corresponding if things become really difficult as what was said in phone calls can be disputed. It also got to the point when I started feeling sick at having to make yet another phone call to BG. If it really becomes impossible, try contacting the Energy Ombudsman as they might be able to help.

    Hope things get sorted.
