Virgin media - opting out right?

Hi Everybody,
I hope you will be able to help me because I am in a quite bad situation and definitely needs some advices...
To explain you the whole story, until last month I have been living with my flatmate in my flat where she had at her name all the bills contract including Virgin Media. Last month she left so we needed to change the contract's name from hers to mine (form signed on 1 July). Confirmation letter from Virgin sent on 9 July.
The problem is that now I have just been told that my contract (job) will not be renewed and as a result I am not able to stay in my current flat so no need for broadband/tv/ landline phone.
I decided to call Virgin today to let them know that I will need to cancel my contract and they told me that I will have to pay the remaining 11 months of the contract (total amount £300).
Isn't there any kind of opting out option in the UK law? I feel this is so unfair for me to have to pay the huge amount!
I would really appreciate if you could give me some kind of advices, if there are any that I could be applied to my case!
Thank you.

Unfortunately you are tied into a contract. It's the same as with a mobile phone contract. If you sign up for 18 months, you can't get out of it for 18 months. Simple as. You might be able to plead financial difficulties but don't build your hopes up.
All I can suggest is that rather than wasting the £300, you take the contract with you to wherever you are moving (if cable is available there) so you will still be getting something for your money.
Couldn't your old flatmate help you with some of the money? It was presumably a joint decision to sign up to the contract. She's not legally obliged to, but morally I'd say she should.0
