Mobile numbers: which provider?

Is there any way to tell which mobile number comes from which supplier? My son has got free calls or texts to other O2 users, but apart from asking all his contacts who they are with, is there any way to tell? ie do all Orange numbers begin with 078*********** and so on?

You can only tell from which network the number originated.You cant tell if the number has since been ported elsewhere, or if the number is on a virtual network eg virgin it will show the master network T-Mob.
