strange text about a premium rate message

Options
Hello there,

I've received a text from 84010 saying "FREEMSG: you were mistakenly sent a premium message for £1.50 on 21/5/09. To claim a refund call ENS on 08002155989 and leave your details."

I've rang the number (as it's free from a landline) and it's just an answer machine message asking me to leave my name, mobile number and address. I've not left my details yet though.

Unfortunately, I can't check my itemised billing for a £1.50 charge as I've recently moved mobile networks so can no longer get onto the online billing of my old provider.

Has anybody else received a similar message

No doubt that phone number is a premium rate line so if you do ring it you will be scammed again. And I bet it keeps you on hold going through menus for several minutes before you can leave your details.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Fortunately 0800 numbers are free from a landline.

I would imagine it's a way of mass sifting for likely targets. £1.50 is not a lot to pay to get the details of someone who replies to such text messages (from a marketing point of view.)

How are they going to refund you? Put it on your CC (and so require those details?).

Its a genuine common or garden FREEphone 0800 number and Payphoneplus could well have ordered the text spammers to refund people who the original text was sent to.

If you have inclusive minutes you can call them from a mobile using this service.

84010 goes back a long way and has been used to scam many thousands of mobile phone accounts, including me!

The fact that you received the text from 84010 you have already been charged £1.50 to £4.50 for receiving this unsolicited reverse bill text.

Report the matter to Phone Pay Plus & your network, who can take up to 50% of the cost of the text as administration.

Very useful. I have been using 0200 222 0900 for a couple of years, but always useful to have aback up.
