Student Loan Garbage

I am now debt free apart from a mortgage and my damn student loans.
I got 4500 when at Uni
Then a seperate 2700 when doing my Teacher training.
I was paying back the TT one out of my salary, but as my wages have reached the threshold of the initial loan, i have to pay that back instead.
My problem is that the original loan (I am now paying back) send me a statement every year but the second loan which I am most of the way through paying back they send me a statement 1 year backdated.
Despite rining them many times, they say there is no way to know my current balance and therefore I don't see how I can ever pay it off. I figure I only owe about 600 quid, but need the exact figure. When I get the annual statement its so far outdated doesn't show interest etc.
Is this legal?
Anybody else managed to get any sense out of them?

another case of the student loan company incompetance. Not sure if its a policy now, are they trained to mis-inform and be deliberatly obstructive? I have had mre run-ins with the SLC than I like to think of. Don't know what we can do about their unfasir treatment, I have posted on the student site and the debt free wannabe site about strange charges they randomly make. Could be a campaign to MP's about the behaviour of the SLC if we can get enough info. I'm fairly sure there are enough people out there who feel that they have been treated poorly.0
