Clothes for`small` 6 year old boy

My DS, is 6 1/2 and small for his age.

He needs some new clothes, you don`t realize when they are in uniform all week!

Anyhow went into town with him yesterday, went into Primark, they do 5/6 or 7/8. 5/6 is too small in tops- 7/8 too large, much too large-looks like borrowed from older brother he does not have.
5/6 ok in trousers but will be too short beforethe end of summer.

When i got home looked online at additionsdirect and lxdirect.com who both have reasonable priced clothes, again this 5/6 and 7/8 thing going on.
I can buy a size 6 in Next-but didn`t want to spend that much-budget and all that.

Any idea`s where i can buy decent stuff,cheaply at a size 6?

Thanks

Adams do individual sizes eg 5 years 6 years. Other than that what about Tesco or Asda?
  • Have you tried tesco or asda. Tesco do age 6-7 tops but not seen bottoms in those sizes. My girls are now grown out of a 7-8 but the 9-10 from most places are just a little long. Why no 8-9 I dont know. So i do tend to go to next just because of the smaller jump in sizes. I think you will just have to look around as all clothes are different.

Sorry if this is a bit of an obvious suggestion but Tesco value clothes are so cheap that it doesn't really matter if he grows out of them straight away, so you could get him the right size and by summer they could be changed. Anyway, we all know what little boys are like with grass stains, filth, etc, they might well be unwearable in a short time anyway!
    Take a look here
    OR maybe Asda?

If your child is quite thin Gap is good for them

  • ASDA do both 6-7 and 8-9. Infact they do all size variations up to 15-16 !!

I had and still have the same problem with my eldest son. He is fairly small for 10 and really skinny so trousers and shorts are a nightmare to stay up. I normally go for drawstring waists (been caught out by the false ones before now). I find Adams quite good for the drawstring jersey shorts (managed some for 89p in last years sales).

Wide leg styles are ridiculous on him. Agree that Gap is for skinny's but don't like their prices and he is not particularly into chinos (not good for grass stains either). BHS is a pretty good fit for him in school trousers, no fussy pleats or bagginess and I have had jeans for him there too. They have a sale on just now and I got 2 pairs of trousers for £3 for next year - he has worn these style since he started school.

He has a couple of M&S adjustable waistband jeans at the moment which are quite good. Some are more comfortable than others though.

Track pants are fairly hit or miss but Reebok and Addidas are probably best for him. I get these from Makro or JJB sales.

I got a few T-shirts for him last weekend in Tesco (and kitted out the other two for summer). They had 20% off and I used the Tesco Clothing Vouchers I signed up for. This took £72 of clothes down to £38 so I was really pleased.

    Thanks for all that,

our local Tesco is only small and does not do clothes, Asda is bigger but out of town and 2 buses away-plus will be busy over Easter, might try at end of next week

Did get him some jeans from Asda at xmas but 5-6 too long and waist too big, he is not skinny-just normal. But has short legs like his mum!

Do not have a car at mo, so was woundering if i could get anything online, he is fussey about what he wears, do have to show him, take him with me. He does not want brands. he just knows what he likes. Took him and toddler brother to town eaier this week- nightmare.

  • Hi swizzle,

    I can empathise with you!
My youngest son is now 9 and is just outgrowing his 6/7 age clothes!!

I've always found Matalan a good place for 'skinny' fits, but my absolute favourite place for kids clothes has got to be TK Maxx. If I browse through their 'clearance' rails, I always end up with armfuls of stuff for both my sons ( eldest is the other way and big for his age!)
They both also like Sports World for trackie bottoms and t-shirts to muck about in - they do a good variety of sizes too, depending on the brand.

Just hope that you've got some of these stores close by....

Personally I would/ and do buy bundles of different aged clothes from Ebay, (often the clothes are either unworn or look brand new) and the ones that don't fit I'd sell back again unworn. You won't lose any money and for about a pound an item generally it works out very well.

    Hiya,

Just wanted to say i envy you from the opposite direction, i have a 12 year old who is 5ft 8 and long outgrown the kids stuff even asda / tesco 15 - 16 is half way up his legs now, so its medium man for most of his stuff and jeans that are at least a 33inch inside leg.

Although my older son was pretty skinny when growing up although lanky too but i found that a lot of Tesco's clothes had elasticated bits in them and reasonable priced, gap too but they were more expensive but their sales are great (got jeans a wee while back for £1.99 a pair) and dont forget with gap that there is the 14 day price promise so if the goods are reduced further in a sale you get the money back down to the price they are at the time and there is no time limit for a refund there either as long as you keep the tags on and the receipt. Handy if you are buying in the sales where something might be slightly out next season wise if there is a sudden growth spurt.

When buying for my sons i found that adams and woolworths clothes were always slightly smaller that other stores, so this might help, with supermarkets and the likes of marks being slightly larger. Primark is often a hit or miss with their sizing, and although several things might be marked the same size have a look at the rack as others maybe larger / smaller so do double check the size you need along with the size up and the size below as you might be luckly.

Hope this helps and boy i wish i had this problem and wonder if i could claim the VAT back on his clothes and footwear after all he is still a child wearing adults clothes through no fault of his own.

Oh my oldest son was 6ft by time he was 13 1/2 and size 12 shoe...............argh!

Middle son alas is only quite tall at 5ft 7 and 14 thankfully!

Hope the info after the mini moan helps.
