Hi - I'm returning to full time education from September as a mature student.
In preparation, I've just bought a new netbook and would like to install Microsoft Office on it.
Someone on the Techie board said that it was possible to get a really good discount on it if you're a student.
Can anyone help? I've tried googling, but there seem to be Home & Student editions, and Teacher & Student editions and frankly, I can't understand the difference between the two or how to access the discounts (ie the Home & Student edition is just bought over the counter and doesn;t seem that cheap to me).
Thanks
Sassie

i was told in my 1st year of uni that the uni provided things like word free to download and anti-virus software. but like most others i'd already bought microsoft office before i went to uni. So wouldnt do any harm to ring your prospective uni to find out if they offered this.0

Just to add. Its called MSDN the place where you get free microsoft software.0 -

its unlikely many unis will provide Word for you download, as it would cost them a phenomenal amount in licence fees but quite a few do provide anti virus software for free!0 -
Hi
I agree with using openoffice if you can, some people cant and fair enough to you if you cant as Im one of those people.
If you cant, my uni gives out free copies of the software if you ask the tutors and provide them with a cd.
My uni also subscribes to MSDN academic something or other, basically most microsoft titles are available to download for us free of charge (but only one copy).
theultimatesteal.co.uk gives out Office Ultimate for approx £40 starting september. I went for this option and dont regret it as I run a few comps at the same time (productivity).
On a side note... Does a netbook provide the power that you need? Im doing engineering and have tried to use the pretty complex simulation and mathematical software on there, but failed. Not a dig, if it works for you then great, if you might need something more powerful then best be perpared.0 -

Thanks for all your suggestions.
Farso, I only got my netbook yesterday and am intending to use it for light microsoft applications only.
Everything else will have to go on my MacBook. What I hadn't appreciated when I bought the MacBook about a month ago was that it truly isn't compatible with Microsoft Office - although the Applestore staff I spoke to at the time advised me (wrongly) that it was, providing I bought the Office for Mac package.
Apparently, there is something called Bootcamp on my MacBook which is capable of running Windows, but to use it, I need to purchase a Microsoft operating system, which is another expense and something Applestore can't help me with and won't support. What a mess..
Consequently, I bought the netbook to run the Window applications I might need. Office for Mac is completely different from Word and Excel, and for me, hard to work with as I've spent the last 20 years using Microsoft applications in my 'old' life.
As a non-IT type person, it's all proving a bit of a nightmare!!!0 -

A netbook will run standard Office apps without a problem. By standard I don't mean 2GB databases or 65000 row Excel spreadsheets.
I run Office on a Samsung NC10 with no problemsThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
