Need help to get new BT land line and broadband service, please !

Hi everybody,

Moving to a new rented flat with no cable broadband available in the area. So the only option is ADSL broadband on a BT landline ( I am not sure if any other company provides land lines which can be used to get a broadband service on).

As the flat has no active BT line and the landlord is not willing to pay off the BT installation charges (about £125 ), so I am looking for any cheaper option to get the line installed and a nice broadband service without download limit ( preferably O2 or something similar).

Can somebody please suggest me some way around.I read in some posts that sky would reimburse us landline installation charges if we sign up for them, but we dont want to sign up for sky. There is a free BT installation offer currently on with 18 months contract and 10 calls per month, but I would be on this address only for 12 months, so cant sign up for this either.

Any help please.

All you need is a BT compatible line . Their are a number of companies that supply them, but they all normally want a connection charge not much different to BT.

You could try the Post Office Home Phone ( No Minimum term with them). You dont have to take their broadband you can go for O2 if you like.

They have been known to say phone line connection will be free when BT say their is a charge.;)

  • ypaymore, i am a bit confused here. You mean to say, that post office don't charge for the connection charges. I just spoke to a guy at post office phone line sales, and he told me i have to pay £107 for installation charges if there is no acitve BT line at my address. If I have to pay this much money, what is the point in going with post office?

What i said was "They have been known to say phone line connection will be free when BT say their is a charge."

Just tell them their is a BT Socket but you dont know if the wiring is still in situ between exchange and the new flat, then ask if they can tell you from their records if connection will be Free or not.

There is an offer on the utilities and phones section of the main MSE site, where you can get installation with BT for free. Only prob is you have to have an 18 month contract - and you are renting so may not be there that long. Still, might be worth looking into as you might be able to transfer it if you move.

as Citysam said, its an 18 months contract. You need to call BT CS and ask them to put you through COT team (Customer Options Team) and then ask for free installation.

Did you bother to read the original post ? Last paragraph.Where the op said.

:confused:Thats all very well but the original poster already says that offer is not suitable for him.

If you your line is still classified as working these people do a 3 month contract, one months notice. Handy for short lets.

Sorry - I didnt pick up on that last bit....and just wanted to give a helpful suggestion!

Either way, it may be transferable to a different address

The remaining line rental term is not transferable only the call package, and you can only have the deal once every 18 months.

    http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/current/Notice09_boo/2-FrameworkImpl337855.htm

Your see however that if the customer decides to end the contract within the 18 month minimum term, they will incur a single charge of £7.50(on the Unlimited Weekend and Unlimited Evening & Weekend plans) or £8.00(on the Unlimited Anytime plan) for each month left of the minimum term.

So if took the service for 12 months only he would have to pay a cancellation charge of £45/£48. Which of course is better then paying the normal connection fee of £125.
