Sim cards - Canada

I could do with some advice on calling from Canada. I have an unlocked phone but also a netbook and Skype credit. I'll be in Canada on my tod for two weeks and need to call family here. What's the cheapest way to do it? Can you get hold of pre paid sim cards and what are the costs like for calling the UK? Is free wifi everywhere in Toronto and Montreal? If so, are connections good enough for using Skype? Any experiences and advice apprciated.

Yes, you can buy prepaid sims from several stores. Rogers and Fido are the major GSM carriers there. I do not think it will be cheap to call the UK with it though. Skype will probably be your best bet. I believe Canada is like the US, with free WiFi in a lot of places.

Go to a Petro Canada gas station and buy one of their calling cards. $20 gives you 1000 minutes. If you use a landline, you dial into a 1-800 number (free), and then it prompts you for the international number you are calling. By far your cheapest option!

Thank you very much for confirming that. I'll top up my skype account and get one of those cards for whenever I'm away from wifi or can't be bothered lugging the netbook.
