Tiler left half finished job and hasnt returned

I shall try and keep this as brief as possible
Hired a tilier to do a job. End of 1st day I explained I had concerns over how the job was looking he said it always looks like this at this stage and will look much better tommorow
The next day he came back and did some grouting. I again expressed my concerns as the tiles wernt flush to the wall and had poped out the tile trim. That night tiles popped off the walls. Turns out he didnt paste the wall only popped a bit of adhesive on eachtile in the middle pressing it down.
That day I paid him 160 for 2 days work plus I gave him a sum of money to buy materials that he needed for the next days work.
He has never returned. My kitchen oks awful and I feel I could have done a better job myself. The tiles come out all over the place. Some are grouted others arent. He with his big boots has scratched my brand new worktops and brand new kitchen nk.
My friend is a builder who popped round cause I was winging lol and he said the best thing would be to pull off the tiles and start again, it really is that bad. This would cost for new tiles, grouting etc and a new man that can. The walls were not put right im sure before (holes filled etc) so this would need to be done
At the moment im living in limbo with mess everywhere. The odd thing being he said he needed some painting doing before he could return and this is now been done to a good standard so taking the tiles off etc will damage that im sure.
I have tried emailing, phoning and texting him. I also got a friend so phone posing as a potential customer and he is very alive and kicking. I have spend an awful lot on a new kitchen, flooring etc and would now like to know what I can do to put this situation right. I have an independant whitness to my complaints and to be paying.
I am just about to write to him a recorded letter. Where do I go from there?

Get along to Citizen's Advice, Trading Standards or the Small Claims court.

You deserve everything to be put right.

You need your money refunding. Write to him recorded,tell him you are dis-satisfied with the work, he is in breach of contract and becuase of this,you no longer wish to retain his services. You expect all monies paid to be repaid by X date. After that you will proceed in the small claims court.

Psst (fab user name BTW) can I litrally do that? I would send it by recorded delivery?
Simply ask for my money to be returned? I have worked out the new tiles would be around 200 pounds -for the job to be redone. PLus id need to pay for the work hes done to be removed

I dont see why not. You had a contract with him to tile your kitchen. you have paid him good money,he has not completed the job and further,he has made a balls of it. Take photos before you touch it and make sure they are good,detailed ones.

Get a skilled tiler in to give an opinion and a quote to redo the job.

Take photos. I take photos before they start and of the finished product. Try and take some of them half way through too, and try an get his face on the photo too. The bathroom guy I had avided his photo being takes by a mile, and now I know why as I has to get someone in to fix his mess.

Would you want someone back whom produces such shoddy work?? Where did you find him - complain to them.

You also need to keep a copy of what you are sending him, if you are going to take it further.

As Andy B says,the correct way to fix tiles is to ensure a smooth prepared base wall surface,you then trowel the adhesive onto the wall using a combed spreader with the right gauge teeth for the type of tiles your fixing and you work a planned row at a time.


"buttering" the backs of tiles with adhesive is truly a bodge and a recipe for disaster...rubbish.

£80 a day is a suspiciously low price for a start (no tax or NI getting payed etc) and its been proved true that the guy is a 'dilutee' by the fact of fixing tiles with a blob of adhesive in the centre, you can 'butter' tiles when trowel access is restricted, but thats the only time really.

It a small consolation I know, but at least you haven't been charged a fortune for a crap job.
