It's actually very rare for a train to be cancelled

Evidently you've never travelled from Leicester to Nottingham then :rotfl:
I used to catch that train all the time and it was forever being cancelled. Ditto Leicester to Birmingham...

Hintza, that train was cancelled I can confirm. It started from Nottingham in the end after the original train at Norwich failed with a mechanical defect.

I did wonder whether he just missed it (slept in) but I don't think so.

Sidmon so where does that leave me?

I haven't interogated him yet about the whole incident and being 17 he is still in his bed. Once I have the full story I will get back to you all.

If he bought another ticket, a letter (enclosing the tickets) explaining the circs (and his inexperience of the rules regarding what to do when an advance ticket train is cancelled) to the train company should bring a refund (for the expensive one he bought).

Also ask them for some compensation for the inconvenience caused by the delay and late arrival at the destination.

Hintza, do what Quentin mentioned. I'm not sure you'll get a refund on the expensive ticket he purchased as it sounds like he did not speak to station staff as if he had they would have endorsed his ticket to enable him to travel on the next service anyway. However you will get some kind of refund on the original ticket as the train was cancelled.

Just been through this same experience -40 mins ago with 16 year old daughter travelling by herself from Perth and missed the connection at Edinburgh as Perth train delayed. Travelling on advanced purchase ticket got ticket endorsed by Station master to travel on next train so on her way home. Panic over.
