This is probably going to be a bit vague, apologies in advance. :o

I have lived in my flat for almost three years, and read the meter regularly. It was just me at first, now two of us and we pay £21 a quarter for water which is obviously very good. I shower at work all but one or two days a week, and even then turn the shower off while soaping up. Mr. Fire Fox showers daily but very quickly. We wash up every couple of days (lazy!), flush regularly, laundry three times a week.

Had a very strange chat with Yorkshire Water on Thursday, unfortunately I was very hungover so didn't really understand it all ... apparently they have taken £480 from my bank account but are putting most of it back. This is because I have apparently been reading the meter wrongly and been undercharged.

From memory this is how I take the reading - I don't supply the last number that is a different colour as I was advised by YW when I first moved in. I say from memory: my meter is in the basement and is no longer accessible to me without going through a shop, which they don't much like. YW have told me I have to give them all the numbers which is not what the website says:
http://www.yorkshirewater.com/your-water-services/water-meters/reading-your-water-meter.aspx

The new price seems to me to be a very big difference as I have already paid some money, if you then add on £480 then it's £20 a month and I know we are careful with water. Does this seem right? I can't understand how they haven't realised this before as obviously I can't have given the same start reading as the previous tenant's exit reading.

£20 a month is not high, don't forget there are standing charges for water and sewerage.

You say you don't supply the last number(singular) but it should be numbers(plural)
The average consumption for a couple should be around 120 cubic metres a year although you seem to use a lot les.

I think we are using fifty cubic metres a year. I am pretty sure the meter only has one number at the end that is a different colour, ??red.

I have today fitted the free Eaga Shower Smart (which Mr. Fire Fox is not impressed by!) and priced up water saving devices to fit to the bathroom tap. Not sure about getting a flushsaver as I don't find our quick flush is very effective. Might try it as Yorkshire Water are giving them away!!
