I'd never hire a van to move house, that's what removal companies are for?
Driving tests are not expensive, only about £60 iirc. And not many lessons would be needed surely, all you'd need to learn would be how to change gear, you'd already know about road signs, speeds, distances etc.
thats great you have the luxury of getting removal companies in,im glad your financially able to do this, but some are not,or maybe some would rather spend the extra it would cost to get a company to do it on thier new house.
yes you would have to be an idiot or be loaded to be able to pass up job opportunities which have manual cars currently in thier fleet which they wont be renewing for a few years just to suit you.
i would hate to have a job that didnt involve driving, getting to see all over our country at our customers expense is great fun.
again you will note my previous post wasnt entirely directed at you or your personal situation.the MSE way would be to pass the manual test.
ive driven autos and enjoyed some of them, but would never dream of only ever driving them.
but as sirbendy notes eventually with the advent of different fuels and technology we will eventually never need to change gear, but unfortunatly we arent at the stage just yet....work permit granted!0 -
Calm down my lovely little (not so little actually) Goldiepoos :smileyhea
Its just that the people who drive auto's - or have to drive auto's only, due to certain circumstances, are fed up to their back teeth with having to justify themselves for not using their left hand and left leg whilst driving. Fed up with being told they are lazy, fed up with being told that they should learn to drive manual. Fed up, fed up!!
I drive an auto now - yes I can drive manual.... but, the reasons I choose to drive auto now is for many reasons. 1) Its easier in flip flops. 2) I can use my left hand to put on make up. 3) I can stroke my dog, who is on the passenger seat
4) Makes life more comfy when stuck in traffic on commute, can twiddle knobs and things. 5) When my back is f......ed, I can still get to work, albet sitting slightly sideways and therefore don't lose any money, which I need desperately to pay my bills. Now that, is MSE! Genie

i am the first person to admit that i have appalling co ordination and have been found to be just on this side of dyspraxia (which my brother has) so i chose not to endanger motorists by persisting with something that could have led to me causing accidents trying to change gear after a break from driving.
Patronise if you will, but i'd say i was being responsible :TMum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

come on jeanie, surely you can see my arguement for learning in the manual? drive whatever the f**k you like, i really dont care, but for ease in the future do the manual test.i know you like a good bit of banter on here but i know you arent that stupid to advise taking the manual test

Interesting debate, I drive both manual and automatic cars, not at the same time I hasten to add;).
To be honest, it doesn't really make any difference to any of us what anybody else chooses to drive.
On balance I would say that I prefer Auto's, but it doesn't really bother me one way or the other.0 -
Give the manual a go. A good way to think about gears in a car is to try using them on a bike. They work on much the same principle. Low gears to start and go slow, higher gears when you start going faster. You'll notice if you select too high a gear too soon, you won't be able to pedal easily. The same on a car where the engine starts lugging and nothing happens when you press the gas pedal. Similarly select too low a gear too soon on the bike you'll be able to pedal, but you won't be pulling the bike along. In a car the effects of this are quite different due to the engine braking. Most people will get the hang of it eventually.0

Thanks for all the replies,i didn't expect so many.
Im still undecided which way to go here but all the replies certainly have me thinking more, the idea of an auto makes me feel more at ease before i go and book the intensive course but i realize it will still be tough whatever route i take, manuel's look like rocket science to me unfortunately.
I really like the old shaped ford ka and as far as im aware this wasn't available in auto? this is one thing that i will have to take into consideration when i make my decision because i really want a small car and there dont seem to be many used cheap enough small cars in the auto market but plenty in the manuel.0 -
Well I drive an automatic and would not want to drive anything else, but . . When I have been on holiday and had to rent a car as yet I have never found an automatic available so I am glad I passed the manual test. After a day of stalling and trying to find the parking brake on the floor I got used to it.0

Not many small cars have a fully automatic gear box. You get horrid little poxy things which are semi auto's... and they are rubbish. Thanks for all the replies,i didn't expect so many.

I want to say just one thing, with me, the smaller the car, the harder I find it to park the blasted thing! Try Focus size cars - you will get fully auto's in them if that is the way you want to go.
Can you not, say, try a few lessons in a manual first? If that doesn't suit, then go auto. Either way, it is your choice and I cannot see that you will be scarred for life if you choose an auto...
:D:D
By the way guys and dolls, thank you for those who contributed who have dyspraxia. A colleague of mine at work has a young son who is dyspraxic and he is really struggling. I tried, a couple of years ago, to get a thread going on Health and Beauty re dyspraxia, but it didn't get alot of response, hardly any if am honest. I was trying to get info for them. Its nice to hear from those that have moved on and are living full lives. Thanks!Genie

I like banter, yes. But what is the point of making someone go through with something that they don't want to do? Apart from pleasing us manual drivers on here? Why? Really, why?
Re holiday rental cars - holiday in the US, you'll only get autos out there.. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Genie
