Memory Foam Mattress - I hate it!

I bought a memory foam mattress from an online bed shop. It was delivered on Monday. I've slept on it for 3 nights and it really hurts my back. My bottom sinks deep into the foam (i'm only 9 stone) and my back is overly arched which is painful. It's also very hot in the bed and my husband and I keep waking in the night because of the heat and the pain in my back.
I've emailed the complaints department of the bed seller and they say that as I have removed the packaging of the mattress that I am now unable to return it for refund. Is there anything I can do?
Please help, I'm dreading going to bed tonight!

Well, from your description the item is not faulty so cannot be returned on that basis. You might be able to return it under the Distance Selling Regulations. There is, contrary to public opinion, no requirement to keep the item in its packaging in order that it can be returned under DSR. However there are exemptions for reasons of hygiene and I would suspect that having slept on the mattress several times, you might find that the seller can claim that this fact means that they have no obligation to take it back. That is a moot point, however.0

They do take a while to get used to...
have you tried one before ... if so is this one different ??
if not tried one before- sorry but why order mail order ?Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
Thanks for your replies - yes I'm a total fool for ordering it by mail as I haven't tried it before and I feel very silly for that. Have you got a memory foam mattress? How long did it take you to get used to?
I should look into the distance selling regulations. Thanks.0 -
Yep I've an ikea one ( not that expensive either compared with some of the bigger names )
its 1 layer foam , 1 layer memory foam , but topped with normal horsehair type stuffing / thick cover .. rather than the ones that more just memory foam + cover
It took a few nights to get used to it, and even now ( 5 yrs on ) it is different - can get a bit warm ..Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
aaargh!!! i just don't want it any more. I thought it would be a great idea and really good for my back but it's terrible. such a waste of money. I just hope I can do something with it.0

I dont think you can claim under DSR as the item is used, they wont be able to resell it. The think with mattress is really you need to try them before buying
I was thinking of getting one myself as I have awful back pain at mo and taken strong subscription pain killers to ease the pain
You might be best reselling it0 -
Hi, I have had a Tempur memory foam mattress now for about 4 years or more, and both my wife and I love it! No way could we go back to a conventional mattress, and when we go away on holiday, I always yearn for my comfortable mattress! Our mattress is made from a layer of memory foam, with a different foam layer underneath. This under layer is made in 2 parts, one to suit my weight, and one to suit my wife's weight, which we had to inform them about when ordering. I would also recommend using a memory foam pillow, the tempur ones are shaped to support the neck and head and keep your spine aligned.
Perhaps you could replace the bottom foam layer of yours with a firmer foam? Or just place a layer of foam underneath the mattress to firm it up?0 -
Same here got a full Tempur memory foam mattress, got mine about 4-5 years ago too, they were new back then. I remember sleeping on it the first night waking up and finding it 'moulded' to me, which made turning over a bit of a struggle.
I chose the latex covering for mine, as I hated the thought of sweating into the thing and having to replace 2k worth of mattress. My advice, just stick some sheets on the thing with some loose top sheets so if you sweat, it will be soaked up by the sheets you're laid upon, whilst the sheets on top will keep you cool. The ones you're laid upon if you use a couple of cotton ones until you're used to it, it will reduce the 'sinking' in feeling until you get used to it 'enveloping you'.
If however the mattress you have is covered in latex cover too. It should be a case of wiping it down if it gets 'soiled' and then recovering it and carrying on. If yours has the same cover, then surely the shop hasn't got a problem with hygiene, as its got a wipe down cover on top? Unless it's the 'bare latex' one, in which case you're pretty much stuffed.
Give it a couple of weeks to acclimatise, you'll find it will grow on you then you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
Perhaps your bed is the problem? Never slept on a memory foam mattress but I'm guessing your old one was uncomfortable so you bought a new mattress?? Perhaps put it on the floor tonight and see if the tough surface underneath it improves it any??
Look into distance selling regulations and find out what that says??
And if you need to - flog it in your local paper, you'll get some money on it.I love surprises!0 -
hi guys, thanks a million for your responses. I have actually ordered a new bed frame which is coming soon so then i suppose the sleeping experience will improve. i hope!!
For tonight I'll put some extra sheets on top as abh suggests. I'll keep trying it until the new bed frame arrives and then I'll see. If i still hate it then i'll sell it and berate myself for the hideous waste of money.
Thanks again money savers ... please forgive my foolishness .. and learn from my dumb !!! mistake. try before you buy.0
