Can I join in please :o

Ive read the forst 20 pages of this thread and have recognised some real signs in myself...I want to read the rest but have to 'pretend' to be getting on with some work.

Anyway, quick question mainly I guess to those of you without children - what do you do to distract yourselves in the evening without alcohol? Obviously I'm a bit cash strapped which is how I found MSE in the first place so anything expensive isn't really an option. I haven't had a cigarette in 2.5 weeks so am struggling with that and am also desperatly trying to lose weight so anything 'foody' is out too.

I wont bore you all with my backgroung but I'm 36, come from a large family many of whom are either struggling with drink related issues or have openly admitted that they are alcoholics and dealing with their problems. I have noticed far too often that one glass is never enough and I have to finish everything until I fall asleep. Am also noticing that I can't remember loads of conversations / events from the night before and this is worrying me now. I haven't had a drink since Monday (I know thats not long but it feels like forever to me) and Im worried about tonight as its 'Friday' and generally the night that Flatmate and I crack open a couple of bottles of wine. She is trying to cut down too so we are both struggling but its in the evenings when its really awful we are like a couple of bored cats hissing and snarling at each other cause we cant have a drink and we cant think of anything else to do. Im almost dreading getting home.

I didn't drink for 10 months last year as I was on a huge diet (lost half my body weight) so i know I can go without but since I've started again its really got a hold of me and I dont know what to do. I cant admit to anyone how I feel as both parents were alcoholics and I really should know better.....

Im sorry for such a huge rambling first post by the way but I'm scared and need distraction techniques and help :o

When you were drinking in the evening, what did you do? Sit in front of the TV and drink? Sit and talk to your flatmate and drink? Or just sit down at a table with nothing going on and no distractions and drink?
You can still watch TV when not drinking
You can still talk to other people when not drinking

So often I hear people say 'If only I had time................'
Well, you have ample time now to do many of the things you wanted to do, so just do it!!

The disease of alcoholism makes one feel restless and discontent when not drinking. If you cannot relax without booze, you may have a problem (which figures as alcoholism runs in families and goes down the generations).
Then again, you may not. However, if you don't start to feel better when not drinking, then perhaps you should seek some further help.

If you can do something you look forward to, even better.
If the choice was drink or housework, I am sure many would drink.
If the choice was something really fun or drink, then there is a better chance that you choose the really fun thing.

The best thing to do is pick up the phone and talk to people that understand. Or, get out of your own head for a while by helping others (charity work, manning the Samaritan phonelines etc)

  • Hi all :hello:

Bells clanging at the moment, but I'm determined to ignore them. Will have a nice cup of tea, then make spag bol for the family (always have it on a Friday, DD's don't feel like it's Friday if we don't!).

So I've changed my signature to 4 AFD's, please YM. I can't have any of that wine from that shiny bottle now, cos I wouldn't dare mess YM around.

Playing tennis tomorrow am, which is difficult with a hangover, however slight, although the evil part of my brain is telling me it will probably be raining so tennis will be called off - but I'm not going to risk that.

    Bi for now xx

  • A good way of being AF is to be ill ;)

Sorry I've been MIA. Had the most awful cold, couldn't lift my head from the pillow yesterday.

I seriously need to catch up with about 20+ pages on here  I'm feeling a bit better tonight thankfully. But not well enough to go to my family dinner. As much as I was dreading it for emotional reasons I'm absolutely gutted I can't go

Oh well. Off to catch up on here instead of getting all glammed up :rotfl:
    Need to start again :o
