Seen your replies, thanks, speak to a couple of freight forwarders, get them to do the leg work, it may cost a bit more but as you mentioned this is a sample.

As for 'they say' be very careful especially if you are going down the lines of purchasing to sell on!, gte some testing documentation to prove that is uk compliant. You have to carry out due dilligence, and to get the sale people lie! trust me I know from mass purchasing experience.

What is the product like as £700 for 3*3 and 3*F-stool seems very cheap just over $1100 about $270 for a 3seater in leather? delivered is very cheap, but not impossible,

I am not aware of the company

How are you paying for these

Have these been shipped or are you paying on sight of the products
Normal practise 50% on order 50% on shipping subject to release of paperwork

The fees add up. These are for a recent shipment from China for about 2000 pounds (including shipping CIF).
    Deferment fee 45
    VAT 325
    Duty 60
    LCL 52
    Uk documentation 65
    China import service fee 27
UK haulage 111 (expensive if they decide a tail lift is necessary)
    Customs clearance fee 65
    Exchange rate surcharge 20
Total over 825 pounds (about 40% of the order value)

I was expecting this but it can affect how much of a bargain things end up.

like other have said, let the forwarding firm deal with the cleanances

I know a guy working at kamino i will be using them in coming months,

Could'nt you do FOB ? over CIF, I would rather go with FOB you have more control over the shipment,

Just a quick update, goods just arrived in the country but i had two unexpected charges, one was the China Import Fee and exchange rate surcharge. I will keep this updated untill the goods are delivered as someone can learn from my errors.

    UK LCL THC = £122.72
    UK DOCUMENTATION FEE = £75
CHINA IMPORT SERVICE FEE = £89.90
    EXCHANGE RATE SURCHARGE = £47.20

Total = £334.82, all the above charges were for the shipping company (don't know the technical name of these charges), have also got a customs clearance gaent and his charges were as follows:

    Customs Clearance: £30.00
    DTI: ££2.55
    Customs examination: £8.70
    VAT:£102.51
    Draft fee: £15
    Haulage: £145

Overall, everything has gone OK, TRUST I paid 70% and then 30% via BACS, and the goods are not for resale. The total order was for 3*3 seaters and 5 footstools at about £750.

    thats it for now.

Thats an awful lot of fees being generated!

Thanks for keeping the thread updated with your progress though :)

Have you got your sofas yet?

    Cheers, Des.

    Hiya,
Just to let you all know you should not be paying anything more than £30.00 documentation fee for imports to Liverpool; Liverpool customs do not charge DTI or an exam fee and the exchange rate fee is something made up by forwarders to bump up their profits! I know, I work for a forwarder in Liverpool!
for future shipments, you really should look at FOB shipments as you will not be charged these extra charges
hope this helps for your future shipments!
    thanks, Sam

    Have a look here:-

Personally 'for one of' shipments you want CIF. If you try FOB you will need an agent to arrange onward shipping to the UK.

Hmm just read what Sam wrote; Sam will you not just incur hassle at the Chinese end if you go FOB?
