    Thanks.
A few hints for you -
Don't try to rush the job, spend plenty of time on the base making sure you've got levels right, if using a circular saw - cut the boards reverse side up - it gives a far better end cut finish - and treat with 'end preservative'
The wife indoors keeping a good supply of coffee / drinks helped as well !!
I started on the front edge, but some people say start at the house wall and work outwards which in hindsight may have been slightly better as I ended up with a small infill strip against the wall. Biggest prob then though would be getting cables in for lighting, I put some LED lights on the front board to mark the edge and some rock lights on the gravel, all cabled under the deck, which was easy with only joists down and looks very effective when the daylight fades.
I was lucky in a way, most of the decking just sat on top of the old existing patio slabs with very little digging out or leveling.

Just thought I would report back to say that we are really pleased that we paid a visit to our local timber merchant. We took in a drawing of our requirements and the guy couldn't have been more helpful - we probably saved ourselves about £100.00 on the kit prices on diydeals.com. The timber is of excellent quality and is being delivered on Saturday - so a nice little project for us to get stuck into over Easter weekend. Thanks again to you all for your replies and advice.
