Garden Decking and www.diydeals.com

We want to construct a deck in our garden and I have seen a reasonably priced kit on https://www.diydeals.com. They seem to offer a a good choice and variation of sizes and deliver free UK wide. It would be helpful to know if anyone has used this site for ordering a deck kit (or anything else for that matter) and what the quality/service was like. Alternatively are there any other good websites/shops who supply deck kits? We have not attempted decking before so thought we would play safe with a kit as opposed to buying everything separately, but some places, i.e. B&Q appear to charge a fortune for their kits.

Any comments (good or bad) and recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Having to pay by cheque with order or COD would concern me, at least there is some come back with a credit card.

After looking at a few of their prices i can say that i recently built a basic deck with parts bought from Gibbs&Dandy at similar cost.

They are a well known builders merchants and also deliver free from local branches. Maybe worth a look before you commit to these other people.

Having worked for a few years in an independent builders merchants, I would recommend ringing or visiting a local builders merchants. Usually you can find someone to spend time with you working out what you need etc and they should give you a better price than B&Q.
Wickes also do factsheets explaining about decking and will sell you the bits. Unfortunately as with most things, quality of timber is one of the important factors and can have a siginficant impact on how your finished deck will look.

    Best of luck.
  • I would also recommend a timber/builders merchants as the price will be a lot better and probably the timber quality will be better. If you take a rough sketch with you they will work out what you need and a good timber merchant will cut it all to size and deliver. These kits are aimed at the inexperienced and are usually vastly inflated pricewise. If you still want to go down the kit route,i believe Screwfix do them and they are a firm i have used a lot with little or no problems.

Have you had a look at Buildrite, http://www.buildriteltd.plus.com/buildrite/pdfiles/Decking%202005.pdf
We used them last year, nearly went to Screwfix, but found this one cheaper.

Thanks everyone for your comments. We are going to take your advice and visit a timber merchant before making a decision. As you have also pointed out its the quality of the wood we are concerned about and by purchasing local at least we can view before buying.

It would still be interesting to know if anyone has used diydeals.com for decking and whether the wood quality is any good.

a deck is very easy to built, but does depend on the size a 3.6mx3.6m will take a weekend to do as all the wood is precut from the builders merchants
normally .4/3.6/4.8) then all you need is to nail and screw them all together. Also use deck screws for the deck boards and not nails makes life so easy if they need to come up and won't come up over time like nails might.

    Hi,
I've recently bought a 5.1m kit off diydeals, but through ebay, where they + are offering lower prices + delivery + option of paypal if you're worried about cash/cheque. I paid cash to the driver on delivery with no problems at all.
See http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZdiydeals310QQhtZ-1 for list of items currently listed.
Although I bought as kit I had delivered as extras 'proper' 4x2 joists and used all decking boards as deck, ending up with about a 36 sq metre deck instead of 25 sq m. Took me around a week / 10 days to build as I didn't stick to square and had to work around a fish pool in garden, as well as dodging rain showers!
The delivery and communications from the company can only be described as excellent, very friendly people to deal with, I would definately recommend them.

  • Kpnuts,

Looks like you have done an excellent job there, I'm going to be putting down some decking in a few weeks, any hints you could give us?
