Is it worth reporting a stolen gate?

Options
Hi,

Hope this is the right place, not really sure where to post. At some point suring the night, someone has stolen one of the gates from my drive (OH had pulled it off and it was on the drive waiting to be put back). I'm not really sure whether to report it or not, as obviously I'm not going to get it back, but I don't like the idea that people can just come onto my property and take whatever they want. May sound pedantic, but we really can't afford new gates right now so we were just going to make do with fixing the ones we had, which now we obviously can't do.

Any opinions or advice would be appreciated

Thanks

I'd be really really careful about reporting this.

    They might take a fence.....

[I've been waiting years for that, sorry]

It's a bit after the horse has bolted though!

Thanks for that! I know there's nothing they can do about it really, it's obviously been taken for scrap metal, just annoying more than anything that they can just take whatever they feel like.

You are not going to get it back and it's not worth claiming off the insurance so just look on freecycle for a new one.

It really isn't worth wasting police time on a gate that you had left unsecured on your property.

I know you don't like people come on your driveway but that's a hazard if you leave valuable scrap lying around. We were having our bathroom refitted and noticed some stuff gone from skip on drive. OH parked his car off the drive the next day and caught 2 men rumaging through the skip again. They didn't give a toss they were caught as to them it's a risk worth taking.

I think your reply was a bit harsh! I wasn't sure whether to bother, hence my post! I understand where you're coming from, as I am of the same opinion, the only reason I asked was because I wasn't sure whether it's something I should be making the effort to report.

No problem, just sounded a bit like you were telling me off! It's not something I wanted to report, I'd feel stupid doing it, just wasn't sure if I should have or not.

you'd only report if you needed a crime number for insurance but your excess is more than the claim probably.

Why would you not report it?

If some drunk took it during the night and dumped it somewhere, the only way you would find out is by telling the police you've lost it.

Hence me not being sure, but like others have said, I'm not going to claim on my insurance, and I'm almost 100% sure it was taken for scrap metal, as my next door neighbour has had some things taken from his back garden.

Also, it's not visible from the road if you're just walking past.
