MealPlans WB 20 July 2009

  • Hi

Im really struggling to budget my shopping. I go once a month to makro and stock up on reduced price meat and chicken for the month, usually costs up to £30. But at tesco's or lidl I can easily spend a fortune even when sticking to a shopping list. Like most people, Im really short of time as work FT and have a baby so I find it hard to make meal plans that are healthy and interesting. Would anyone be able to recomend a book or something that could give me some pointers.

    Thanks

    Hi there

I would check out the mealplanning thread in the mega index on this forum - there is plenty of wisdom there by the in house experts on meal planning.

    to get you started

    1. lots of people shop online - to avoid the "spend a fortune" temptation of shopping instore.
    2. Make an inventory of what you already have in - so you dont buy doubles or extra stuff you dont need
    3. Plan in advance - get stuff out of the freezer tonight ready for tomorrows evening meal.

Here is my meal plan - i work FT - but no kids - just OH and cat

Sunday - roast meat - veges etc
Monday - stir fry using roast meat and veges
Tuesday - OH is home late - HM soup and HM bread
Wednesday - Pie made from last of roast meat - pastry top - HM jacket potato
Thurs - Mince out of the freezer - shepherds pie
Friday - rest of mince as spag bol
Saturday - out to nieces birthday

This covers the coming week for main meals

OH doesnt eat breakfast - i take cereal to work -
Lunches - Mon and Tues for me - leftover roast meal, OH roast meat sarnies, Wed, left over soup and bread, thurs - left over pie, fri - left over shepherds pie.

I always make more than i need so it covers lunches for the next day.

Works for us - but it isnt the only way to do it

    Good luck

    Trin

I'll add this to this week's meal plan thread so that you can see what other Old Stylers are eating this week ;)

  • This is my first posting here. I am slightly addicted to this site and have spent ages reading other people's entries- thought it was time to contribute!

Friday- HM fish fingers, chips and beans
    Sat- lunch- HM quiche, salad
dinner- slow cooked sweet and sour ribs (in my new SC), rice, veg
Sun- late lunch- roast chicken, stuffing, yorkshire puddings and potatoes
Monday- leftover chicken with potato cakes and veg
Tuesday- baked cod with mash potato and steamed veg
Wednesday- daal and bombay potatoes with rice and salad
Thursday- stirfried rice with prawns and veg

This is a slightly unusual week for me as the children are away so I'm only cooking for myself and my husband.

Boodle can you post the recipe for the summer peach pudding it sounds yummy?

Hi LV :) It is just summer pud but using chopped up peaches and strawberries instead of other berries. Next time I think I would buy brioche especially for making it rather than ordinary stale bread ;)

Little Miss Sunshine  Welcome to the meal plan thread. Your menu looks lovely! I find it's a nice change to just cook for DH & I its useful as we can eat what we want to not just what everyone else will eat IYSWIM? :D
  • I'm sorry Sunnygirl- I am so new to this I do not know what IYSWIM stands for!!

But I agree, I tend to cook entirely different things if it's just the two of us- my children are very young still but when they are older, I will only cook one meal for everyone and expect them to eat it!

I quite agree with both of you I also make the children eat whats put in front of them ;) DH & I like some veggie meals etc that the children (well 2 of them) wouldn't touch so I just don't do them.
