What do you do with a broken car?!

H broke down on the motorway the other evening. The news is that the cam belt came off and took out a load of other stuff with it. The bill will be over £1000 to fix with plenty of unknowns in to boot - it had a new started motor last week! H isn't interested in fixing it really as he was planning to get something newer later in the year anyway.

The car is a 53 plate Astra Estate turbo diesel with I think 130,000ish miles on the clock.

What should we do with it!? Is it worth anything to anyone? I've never had to scrap one before, gutted that it doesn't qualify for scrappage deal really :(

Ebay is going to the best place place to sell as it sounds although it may need a new engine.

Thinking about it, he treated it like a skip as well - I'm not sure anyone would want it!

If it was clean do you think there's a possibilty of getting a few quid for it? If we get it towed from the garage? I'm worried about putting it on my new block paving which is being laid today!

Our Audi did the same. We stuck it in the local free ads/on-line paper (Trade-It) and DW had one bloke in the front garden and another on the 'phone bidding for it! Result: towed away and £145 towards the next. It was knackered anyway.

Maybe Astra spares are easier to come by, but if the body's sound, because you could do an engine swap relatively easily, there should be interest.

A '53 Pate Astra Diesel???!!!!

Shed or not it's going to be a terrible waste to let that happen.

Get it on the bay as spare or repairs. :money:

Where's the car? Was it towed by a local garage because if it was and is in their compound it will be attracting storage fees each 24 hour period that its there.
If it was AA/RAC where have they taken it, if its being recovered with no one with it it could end up on your block paving and oil is a swine to get out of them bricks.

You could try Ebay, as has already been stated.
    Also Gumtree is pretty good.

I would advise however, cars are meant to have cambelt changes as stated in the service manual and 130.000 miles is far to long and was well over due :)

    Goodluck

But no one said it hadn't been changed. Mine had, and it still failed.
No such problems with my chain-drive engine now though!
