I wouldn't even ask for recompense. The couple of times it's happened to me I simply submitted an expenses charge "holiday flights and hotel forfeited re: project X", and given the amount involved both times they must have been signed off by my directors and payment authorised.

say employers only have to give notice the same lenght as th eholiday to refuse a request, nothing about withdawing approval.

I can't find the link but I do rememeber reading something on one of the sites about this.

    Something along the lines of

Unless explicitly allowed in the employment contact once an employer has approved holiday time then to take that back requires mutual agreement.

So as part of you agreeing to not take the approved holidays you make a condidtion that you get compensated for losses.

Some companies will just pay this others may prefer to look for other solutions like trying to work round the time off maybe working late or the weekend before/after to cover the time.

Should have been mentioned immediately the request from the employer came to cancell the approved holidays so they new this was an issue that will need to be resolved.

This has happened to me twice in the last few years.
Obviously it isn't covered by travel insurance, so I asked the company if they were willing to pick up the costs, and they were, so I cancelled the trips and just reclaimed costs on expenses.

It isn't reasonable however if they are expecting you to pick up the tab.

I'd probably be willing to cancel my booked leave but there is no way I'd pick up the tab for it and frankly I don't think any company would expect you to. Just speak to them, Im sure your find they're happy to compensate you.
