My ex partner of 4 years and 2 babys, has walked out and has took the car. The thing is we only bought it 3 months ago and i paid for it with my money and in my name and stil have the reciept, but as i dont have a licence the log book is in his name? is there anything i can do?thought maybe someone out there may have been through similar situation x
Gemma, you are the legal owner of the car - and you have the receipt to prove it. Tell him to return it by "x" date or you will report him to the police for taking the car without your permission. If you can afford it, do it via a solicitor's letter. If you can't afford a solicitor then send him the letter recorded delivery, keeping a copy for yourself.

Ot just report it stolen straight away and he will get pulled by the ANPR system eventually.

But the letter will be proof for the police that he has taken the car without permission and not returned it.

Why did your ex partner walk when he had a car?

I done this ( went to the police ) when my ex boyfriend took the car which i had paid for with my credit card i had the reciept but they told me that all he had to say was that it was a gift as he was the named driver etc & they told me there was nothing i could do ......they may have been wrong but thats what they told me and i left the police station in tears.
    i didnt drive eaither
i learned a b ig lesson from that episode
didnt want to say earlier that this had happned to me as i seem to have had everything happen to me recently and posting on the boards ppl might think iam not being serious
i managed to get the car back in the end what a relief........but the police comisarated with me and said there was not a thing i could do...i hope for OP sake that the info they gave me was wrong

How much is the car worth? Is it worth persuing legally? Also has he left anything of value in your home that you could sell to recoup some of the cost.

I would send the letter recorded to him requesting the return of your property and a copy of the receipt and possibly an extract of that neat legal blurb from the insurance site above :) Make sure you put in the letter that as you purchased the vehicle on x date only for him to use as a means to transport your children you now require the return of the vehicle and keys to yourself along with any documentation etc otherwise you will have no option than to register the vehilce as stolen with the police and you really would prefer not to have to take such drastic actions etc etc

    Good luck

(FYI I am on the log book on both our cars - mine because it's well... mine... DHs because the day we went to collect it he'd forgotten his driving license at home the git... as it was from a dealer we needed proof of ID before they'd release it etc so I'm the one on the log book :) Not that I'd ever make a runner with it (mine's worth more anyway LOL))
