Seat Leon has no 1st & 2ng gear??
Hi, I'm a girl: please be gentle;)
My OH has a 2002 Seat Leon, never had any real problems with it until tonight when he was driving home and tried to change gears, the 1st and 2nd gears are not working at all
I suspect this will be expensive and involved but would like a wee idea whats happened before Main Stealer rips us off
TIA

you could be lucky and find it just a worn linkage or a linkage has popped off or a cable has snapped or become stretched....work permit granted!0

I think your gearbox needs reconditioned. But even if it is just a linkage, I don't see how your lucky. It will still be expensive as more than likely, the engine will have to come out to get at the gearbox.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

Vw golf engine and box. Common fault is the selector fork snaps it's mounting. Costly as it's a box out nd rebuild. You may be lucky and it's just the cable linkage broken. Have a lookee here:

Hi, garage says the gearbox is knackered, he's not a gearbox specialist so is offering to send it away to his guy to be reconditioned (he says anywhere between £400-£800) or if we can source our own replacement one he'll replace it for £150. Not really what I wanted to hear
Thanks for the advice guys0 -

Thanks for the link, am currently chasing a few leads from there. Just another thing, the mechanic has offered to replace the clutch at the same time (more £ obv) and have noticed on a few forums that when people put in a new gearbox they replace the clutch too even if its fine? Is this worth doing now to avoid any further clutch problems new gearbox would cause?
Thanks0 -
It depends on a number of factors.
1) Mileage
2) How it's been driven
3) Is the clutch slipping? (put it in a high gear going up a hill and see if it slips out of gear
4) Is it making any whistling/whining noises?
The only reason some people do it, is due to replacing the clutch often means getting the gearbox out (labour = time = money).
If you're happy the clutch is ok, leave it. I wouldn't my tyres just because they had to get the wheels off for some new brakes.
It may also be worth contacting local scrap yards for gearboxes, i highly recommend sourcing one from an AUTOMATIC, due to the fact it's nearly impossible to rag them! I'm pretty certain the 2002 Seat Leon & MK4 Golf share some gearboxes

We always advise replacing clutch assembly when replacing gear boxes - there are some exceptions of course, your mechanic would be the best person to advise you.Genie

If you're going to keep the car, change the clutch too, esp if you can get a gearbox for £150.0

I wish! The labour for the gearbox is £150, I'm looking at paying £400-500 for the actual gearbox. Hes quoted me another £170 for the clutch, don't think we'll go for it, just can't afford it at the moment
Thanks everyone for the good advice0
