Do Something Amazing- Give Blood

  • I am so proud of all of you who have tried - some of you have even liked -giving blood. WELL DONE:T :T :A

It is the single most charitable thing that you can do - there is no cost to you only a short time and it really can save lives or change lives.

Now you have registered, you will get a regular magazine from them which I urge you to read. It has facts and figures, articles and case studies of who may have received your blood.

Now you have got into the habit of giving blood, maybe you would like to extend your repertoire and think about signing an organ donor card and telling you loved ones that you have or joining the Anthony Nolan Trust register for bone marrow donations (more painful and has to be done under anesthetic but just as rewarding). The staff at the Donor Centre will be able to help and advise.

Again - well done to you all and don't forget the new campaign - SPREAD THE WORD that you do it and encourage others to do so.

My blood isn't good enough, else I would. For some weird reason, if you have received a blood transfusion, you can't donate. Totally bizarre! So it's good enough to give to me, but not good enough to give back in case they have given me something accidently in a transfusion!

It took me over 8 years to be able to donate blood, but I did it! Either I was ill or pregnant/feeding. But then I was found to need constant topping up of assorted natural bits and bobs [body giving me grief by going on strike!] and they don't want it now - so, 9 years of giving and I've done the best I can. Wonderful that so many have had a go and are now new donors. Well done, OP, well done indeed.

Hopefully, I should be able to give blood in 8 months, providing I sort out my weight issues.

I tried to give blood again last Sunday, but it was trickling out so slowly they said they woulnd't even have got half a bag from me, so they sent me home! Got to wait another 4 weeks before I can try again  I'm the only person in my immediate family who can donate, because my mum and brother have definitely been given blood, and my dad might so they won't risk it. Because of this I think it's only fair that I give something back to help others

It is good that you are making the effort when so many people are too busy to spare an hour to save a life.
I know of some people that have overcome a phobia of needles because they feel obligated and yet others dont even make an effort because they think that enough 'other people' go.

Next time you go make sure that you have taken on some fluid beforehand and take a brisk walk just before you go in and if it applies take the stairs instead of the lift just to get the blood flowing a bit.

I am looking forward to getting back in the fold later this month after an enforced absense with a broken wrist.

I have finally talked my OH into donating, he's a virgin. He is coming with me when I next go, which is next week. I told him he is a brave little soldier. :D

I'm not that far away from you torbrex! I went to the session in Leven and it was packed! I think I struggled to give because I'd been sitting waiting so long, maybe I'll do some star jumps next time to get the blood flowing again :p My friend went to the one in Buckhaven a few days ago and apparantly there was an hour long queue to get in! It's good to see so many people in this area aren't too busy to donate.

I am a platelet donor and have to go to Dundee to do that. I go straight onto the machine so there is no waiting, the procedure does take 90 minutes though plus the travelling time so I need a half day off when I go.

Had you made an appointment, La-Cara? I find that waiting is greatly reduced by booking online or by phone.
