I have donated blood many times in Norway where I used to live (they had this awesome scheme where you'd get a gift for donating your blood, for instance they got a designer to make a wine glass, and then you could collect one wine glass each time you donate, so after donating a few times you have a dinner set! They were really nice and couldn't be bought for money).

However when I moved to the UK I tried to donate once. The nurse had to call over the head person there who took one look at me an said "you shouldn't donate blood it would be to painful for you". I replied that it would be fine if they just used a butterfly needle, to which she replied something like "we haven't got those, they cost more money, our needles are about twice the size of your veins, so I won't even attempt it". I haven't been back since....

    GRRR.

I have donated many times in the past with a butterfly needle (what they use for children). They also always use this in hospital when drawing blood from me (even UK ones!).

    blood type: 0-
so they should want my blood really!!!

Did the SCA test come back negative, if so, that's excellent news. It sounds like you've got plenty on your plate as it is.

Yes it did; I wasn't really expecting otherwise. Got my next donation scheduled for 29th June.

Does anyone know how quickly they test your blood for diseases and stuff? I gave blood yesterday and had a phonecall today from them asking me to phone a doctor back but they're closed now. I did faint which I imagine is why they're phoning but my mind is imagining all sorts of diseases that I might have!

i had this once i gave blood on the friday and went on holiday on the saturday, i got back to a letter saying they had unsucessfully tried to contact me but could i phone them. as it was a bank holiday weekend i worried about what it was about from sat to tues. i was convinced there was somthing wrong, when i did speak to the blood service dr i was advised that the blood samples recieved at the lab we partially clotted and it was proberbly a fault with the doner set, but they advised me to have my clotting times checked just to be on the safe side. i did this no problem it was a problem with the sample being exposed to air and starting to clott not me. all that worry for nothing!!

dont worry about it tonight, its proberbly nothing, stay calm and phone them tommorrow.

better luck next time. keep trying, they will not be able to use a part donation. but dont let that put you off. it is an important comidity and so it didn't work out this time doesn't mean it wont next time (i have one good side and try as the might the cant get enough out the other arm!!) try the other side next time. if you have a large bruise it may be the injection technique that caused a poor reponse. please keep going and dont get dishartened. i bet there are loads of people on this site that donate and have had failed donations (i have had 3 myself)!!

Thank you for your response as the blood service have never replied to my question and they didn't let me know on the day :(

Unfortunately it's unlikely I'll be going again in the near future as the time will be wasted for me and them, it's not that they can't get the blood, it's that my body goes into a hot/cold state and I drain of all colour and they won't continue blood withdrawl, 5/10 minutes later I'm fine but that's no use....the same happens if I give blood samples for testing.

Ah well, I will continue to admire those that can.
  • unfortunately!!! the blood tranfusion service do not allow donations from people who identify as poofs, homosexuals, gay men or bent shot queers. So until they change their policy, I can only see the shortage of blood continuing.
