However that costs, its all every well us doing it but it may have a knock on effect on the poor. Then where is why should we doing anything, countries like China and using massive amounts of energy and this will only get worse
Just to dispel another myth, the world's largest investors in renewable energy at the moment are #1 United States and #2 China.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

So rather than rely on Russia we should rely on other European states to keep the lights on, who will charge us what they like for the privilege.
Clearly the answer is to have a diverse range of power sources as pointed out above.
The misguided belief that renewables could provide the backbone of our future energy needs just delays the decision to build nuclear power stations which would.
Funny how none of the big 6 offer a Nuclear Tariff, I wonder what the take up would be?
Remember " In Rod we trust"That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

I don't disagree we need new nuclear. I reckon it would need to make up at least 30% of the energy mix.
But you miss my point about relying on other European states. They would be relying on us as much as we would rely on them. Currently all the UK generators sell to the UK retailers, who buy as many MWh of electricity as they need.
What I'm suggesting is that you create a Europe-wide market, so effectively our electricity can be coming from anywhere in Europe.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

I dont know about that but they are both one of the biggest polluters, China is the worlds factory
So what's your point? They are the largest polluters and they're the ones doing the most about it. Neither of those suggests we should do nothing.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

This is the discussion thread for the following MSE News Story:Government says energy bills to rise: time to switch NOW
"Energy prices will rise from 2015 to pay for greener power, so it's worth acting to cut your bills..."
With headlines like this anyone would think MSE has turned into the Daily Mail!
Talk about scaremongering, switching "NOW" would have no impact whatsoever on what happens in 6 years time. :rolleyes:Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
This 'news' story reminds me of lovemoney - seemingly every week they produce an article which suggests, actually, NOW is the BEST time to switch, don't delay...and then include a link to their own comparison/switching site which they clearly derive mucho moola from . As subtle as a flying mallet...Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -
I was only stating a fact and answering your last comment regarding the myth about who are the biggest investors in renewable energy.
I never said we should no nothing, in fact I would like to be proactive if I could, but not at the expense of penalising those on low incomes who already pay a high proportion of there income on some of the most expensive tariffs. Before anyone says shop around, well many do it doenst make that muhc a difference, fuel prices are still around 40%+ more than they were last year and still waiting for the price to drop
I am sure most of us would love solar panels, micro wind turbines, but the priority for many is a roof over your heads, food on table etc etc Let alone swanning of to far flung places polluting the atmosphere
Its so easy to think or yes lets pay more to get a wind turbines blah blah blah, some people cant pay more because they dont have anymore to spend, so if they pay more something gives. I dont trust the government to help, they still haven't helped everybody with the 10p tax fiasco, so if they say well we will help those on low incomes who will that be?So what's your point? They are the largest polluters and they're the ones doing the most about it. Neither of those suggests we should do nothing.0 -
This is quite frankly a rather silly article and far, far below the standard Martin usually delivers. It's meaningless to link switching now to prices of electricity in 2015.
If Martin wants to do something useful - and he's usually good at that - then how about lobbying for
a) fairer and clearer electricity tariffs NOW, i.e. something where you can genuinely compare like with like. If I can work in the electricity industry and not understand it, how can others?
b) lobby the government to ensure that support for renewables comes from general taxation rather than from people's electricity bills. The current system ensures that those in fuel poverty pay the same as a millionaire.
That would be a much more useful message.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
