Hi

I started looking to replace my old windows 98se desktop at the beginning of the year but was delayed so decided to wait until Windows 7 as this forum seemed to sing its praises.

My query now is am I better waiting until new pc's are on sale with Windows
7, or picking up a new pc with vista/xp and trying to buy the Windows 7 stuff out today (if it hasn't all been snapped up)?

I am not technically minded at all so please be patient with me, thanks.

You'll save more now by waiting until W7 is available pre-installed.

Thanks for your quick reply, macman.

I just wondered if the new pc's with W7 would be alot dearer (eg. more people opting for ones with W7 and the retailers maybe reducing ones with the less popular vista perhaps?)

If you're buying a new computer then you want to be looking at retailers that are enrolled in the upgrade scheme, whereby buying a Vista computer now means when Windows 7 is released in October you will get a copy for free/very small charge.

The only difference is you'll have to install it yourself, which will require a clean installation. Upgrades aren't an option at present.

Many PC's are built to order (eg most Dell's are) so thsi doesn't really apply. As anewhope mentions, you'll not be able to buy Vista and upgrade to W7, you'll have to do a clean install, which is a hassle most people would rather avoid.

You can preorder Windows 7 Home Premium E, from Amazon soon for around £45.

But thanks to the EU !!!!ing off Microsoft it is shipping without a browser and is a clean install rather than an upgrade.

So I guess I'll stick with Vista until I upgrade the PC, unless someone comes up with a one click solution.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Anewhope, if W7 is released in October does this mean that I will be able to buy a new pc after October with W7 installed (if so, I might as well wait until then).

savemoney, I know alot of people on here mention Dell but I am not really keen on going down that route, thanks.

macman, I wouldn't fancy doing a clean install (not computer savvy at all) so would prefer probably getting a new pc with W7 - whenever that might be.

I appreciate all the advice, as always.

You will probably be able to pre-order a system with W7 pre-installeda few weeks before release.
What's your objection to Dell exactly? The advantage of buying a built to order PC is that you can get exactly the spec you want, rather than whatever the shop happens to have in stock (and wants to get shot of).

Might wait to pre-order then. I was put off Dell by a computer savvy workmate (think it might have been due to compatibility/upgrade issues) - I know, abit lame of me but I did trust his opinion.

I'm not sure where I'll be getting the pc from yet. I was hoping to go down the route of getting one built locally but one pc guy said it would be cheaper for me to go to PC World - eek! - than he could do one for.
