I'd suggest you research your subject more.ask you to justify that it is not one of the worst products on the market. It's resource hungry, has a relatively poor virus database, and Symantec's renewal pricing policy is a cynical rip-off. Allegedly.
Perhaps you should take your own advice? Norton (the latest 2009-engined version) is surprisingly light (20 MB of RAM used...), very slick and gets rave reviews...Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -

Avira is using 10MB of RAM on my XP Pro system for the guard and agent processes, it's fast and also gets rave reviews...
Oh and it's free...
(Still I admit newer versions of Norton are much better than the old rubbish, but still as a home user on a MoneySavingExpert forum, not sure how anyone can recommend spending money on an application which is just as well served by a free one!)0 -
Why do so many threads in the techie stuff forum turn into the "which is the best antivirus software" debate

It's like most things, people who aren't in the know trust word of mouth and if one person somewhere in Siberia say's "Oh this anti-virus is great!", it soon spreads across the world and people are all saying the same thing about something that's actually rubbish.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

True, but threads degenerate like this because people can't be bothered to read the FAQs at the start of the forum, nor search the forum to see if it's cropped up before.
This week there has been many questions about restoring tunes on iPods, this crops up weekly.
Which camera shall I choose, one posted almost everyday.
Anyone mention Macs or PCs together, and we know the thread will turn into an argument about "mine is better than yours"
Just the nature of the internet, people can't be bothered to look for themselves first, then ask a question when they've exhausted other methods.0 -
Really? Might have to try it then - ATM my slimmed down Avast install is using 75MB (no real loss to me but thats a LOT of RAM if Norton can do the same thing in 20!) and AVG used about 95 on my old laptop...Avira is using 10MB of RAM on my XP Pro system for the guard and agent processes, it's fast and also gets rave reviews...
My key requirement for any AV software is that it runs in the background, I don't see it and it never annoys me unless I NEED it to. Avast works ok in that respect, but if they wanted money for it i'd dunk it. I don't really "need" realtime AV...Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -

Yes it does vary through the day though, with a load of apps open the total is now just under 12MB there are two processes avguard (around 8 to 10MB) and avgnt which is currently using 1.5MB. I assume avguard increases as more apps are running with processes it has to test.0
