Just bought some okra reduced in Asda, but now have no idea what to do with it, im trying to get DS and DD to try different foods, and sometimes i have to try new things too!!!!! What does it taste like? and how do you cook it?

Yum yum! Lovely stuff, but never tried cooking with it.
This site has quite a few recipes: http://www.ivu.org/recipes/indian-veg/ . The okra section is halfway down the page.
Alternatively get some Indian cookery books out of the library or kidnap the mum of an Indian friend!0 -
Okra, is also known as ladies fingers and is very popular in Indian cooking.
There are some good receipes there, I usually just chuck it into the pot when cooking a veggie curry. Although you can do it gently with just some spices and oil. But I don't do gentle in cooking curry

dice and shallow fry with sliced onions and green chillis, seasoning, salt etc,quite simple and quick to cook. you can use quite a bit of oil as they fry better in more oil and when tender/cooked, just drain off the excess oil.
eat with naan or bread.Nice to save.0 -
they have a slightly slimy consistency when cooked, but it is not unpleasant, just a little odd.....

This is what I do for a quick okra curry:
Approx 250 gms prepared okra
ie wash, pat dry and then slice off top - where the 'cap' ends, slice each okra into 2 or 3 pieces, depending on size
MUST dry carefully as otherwise can get a bit 'slimy'
1 small onion, sliced
1 tomato chopped
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp red chilli powder
1 tsp heaped ground coriander
1 tsp heaped ground cumin
1 level tsp salt or to taste
2 cloves garlic, finely sliced or crushed in garlic press
1 small green chilli chopped
Juice of 1 lemon
1 tablespoon chopped fresh coriander
Approx 3 tablespoons veg oil
Put oil in saucepan and heat, add onions so that they sizzle and then add ALL other ingredients apart from lemon juice and fresh coriander. Stir well.
Cover and cook on low heat, stirring frequently to check not catching, for about 20 mins or until oil starts to cook out. Add lemon juice and fresh coriander and cook for another 2-3 mins and serve with naan/pitta/chapattis.
If you don't have lemon juice, can stir in about 2-3 tablespoons of natural yoghurt.
If is still slimy - haven't cooked long enough, cook for a bit longer.

Before you cut the okra make sure you wash it. If you wash it after cutting it, you will get loads of "saliva" coming out!0

I have cooked it twice and I found it sticky and gluey, not impressed really. I did wash it first but there's still 'saliva' coming out0 -
Sorry off thread but I recall Gordon Ramsay being on Room 101 and he said that Okra should go into Room 101 as he thought the stuff was awful.
