I don't think that is right - with compression or not.0 -
My t Mobile is 1gb limit for web and walk think web and walk plus has a higher limit. If I want to down load a large file I connect my phone to wifi and download through that instead.0

you only have to wacth a few programs on iplayer and that 1gb gone.
plus with moden smart phones you don't want to be browsing rubish mob web when you can be sufing the real web and most pages are 1mb plus now so thats less that 500 pages a month not good you can look at that in a week0 -
I think there is perhaps a need for two plans - one for smartphone users which provides more data for heavy users, users browsing the "full" Internet etc. and quality of service at a higher price, and one for "dumb" phone users who just want to do a small amount of mobile web browsing - Facebook etc. and who don't want to pay huge amounts and don't use much data, but want the flexibility to pay a set amount and jump in and out of the mobile web.
As a Smartphone user who uses perhaps 100Mb of data a month (max) I don't want to be subsidizing people using gigs and gigs - they can pay for it themselves if they want to use that much data.
Are we getting to an unsustainable position where people are demanding more and more data for intensive applications such as video streaming, but demanding the price stays the same? It's not realistic. More data == paying more money.
I don't necessarily agree with you that you don't want to be browsing the mobile web when you can get the "full" web, I use Windows Mobile and if I want a quick catchup of the news or something like that, then I go straight to BBC Mobile or the mobile site of my favourite news site, it's quicker to load, uses less data and there are no irritating ads.
Times have clearly moved on - I remember when BT Broadband first came out with a 1Gb download cap - and people thought that was generous then! Now we seem to be getting to a situation where you can use 1Gb on a mobile phone!

I have a HTC Magic which is a data heavy phone and has many apps including live streaming , youtube (which is preinstalled on the phone) and beebplayer (bbciplayer) ,
I can watch 1 30 minute show on beebplayer and that uses 70-100 MB ! It has a full browser which is content rich and uses data , It is an internet phone constantly connected to the internet becuase it work's ion teh "google cloud" syncing contacts , emails and everything else.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND VODAFONE , their 500 MB usage stinks! the Magic is like the IPHONE and they give us 500 MB , it's all about Profit!
That brings me to an interesting point..........
FUP (Fair usage policy's) are their in place apparently to make sure all customers get a fair and equal usage so other people's services quality etc are not effected. But if this 500MB FUP is their to make sure everyone get's an even and equal service.
Why did they release a pack that gets 5 GB , you can add on your phone to use it as a modem. They bring out this pack , it sort of makes the theory of the FUP non-existant.
So i pay more , i get more but why use the FUP which is their for a reason apparently and then bring out a pack that is 10 times more. Vodafone is very disappointing ......... I am great , yes I am
:rotfl:If you think I was useful , Thank you, for thanking me

Well it doesn't sound incredibly unreasonable to me... you pay more and you get more - as you say.
Maybe what Vodafone should say is that there are 2 plans with hard limits:
500Mb for £x
5Gb for £x
Then people would know exactly where they stand and could decide on the right plan for their device.
But I suspect what they want to do with the 500Mb plan is be flexible - recognise that they the plan is not about unlimited data, whether it impacts on other people or not - but if people go slightly over occasionally, it's not a huge problem. Which also seems fairly fair to me.
You say 500Mb is not enough for new smartphones, I am sympathetic to that point and in time I imagine limits will get revised upwards. But at the moment the vast majority of phones and customers probably don't use anywhere near 500Mb, so they have made an estimation of an average user's maximum use, given the proliferation of various devices on the network and added an amount of buffer. It's about trying to make as many people as possible happy whilst protecting revenue from higher packages from users who are going to hammer their connection!
Chances are people who have a dumb phone who just want some access for Facebook and e-mail, say, aren't going to pay a huge amount for this - it's also about trying hit the sweet spot of what people are willing to pay. £5/£7.50 seems about the right amount to me. The alternative is lots of plans with lots of different data limits at lots of different prices and lots of confusion!

i've had a reasonably light month on my iPhone for data usage, mainly on the basis that i've been too busy to use it. However, i've still managed a total of 197mb of data transfer.0

just a thought but how much data do you think is used on the live feeds appearing on the front screens of phones like the N97?
Say I bought an N97 to use mainly on WIFI in the home & hotspots using a 3 Mobile PAYG sim which gives you 150MB free would this be enough to keep the feeds up-to-date?0 -
The BBC News RSS feed is 21kb so 150Mb would be enough to refresh it 7,314 times! To refresh it say every 30 minutes would be 1,440 times per month, obviously if you have more RSS feeds than just one it would use more data, but then you probably don't need to refresh RSS feeds every 30 minutes!0
