I'd rather be in negative equity geoff than have £750k in the bank and be spending my time on here.

I thought you were in negative equity (like myself!).

But your also spending your time on here?

New poster here but I thought I'd comment rather than simply watch as I have done for the last 18 months!

I believe it is about time that something is set into motion to get people back into work where they are able and pay down some of the taxation burden we are likely to face in the coming years.

My greatest fear is that the wrong people and easy targets will be targeted like my father who genuinly cannot work due to ill health (but still thinks he can!). He would genuinly love to get back into work but I'm afraid to say hes not very employable due to his poor health. On the other hand, a close family relative (won't say who) has been claiming for over 10 years for a "bad back" but I'll tell you now the only thing she (there's a clue!) suffers from is bone idleness. She knows exactly how to play the system and I bet there are tens of thousands out there just like her. That is who should be encouraged back into work with a swift stoppage of the benefit money. She is a law abiding citizen generally, and I can say without doubt if the benefits did stop, she would go out and work before turning to crime. Don't know if this can be said for many others though.

I fear it will end up similar to crime if you excuse the analogy where people who are genuinly honest law abiding citizens of this country are targeted and face fines and prosecution (such as minor motoring offences) as it is good for "targets" and the authorities know most will pay up without question whereas the serial offenders and career criminals seem to be allowed to get on with it because it is too labour intensive and unprofitable (in terms of target achievement) to keep chasing them.

Basically, I think it is a good idea but no doubt the execution will be an absolute shambles and it will end up scrapped after 6 months at a cost of £millions to the ever decreasing tax paying pool.

I only know 3 people who don't work because of ill health

One had a major heart problem a few years ago - I don't know what, if anything he receives from the state - he is well provided for by insurance and his medical retirement pension.

The other 2 have MS, one is a girl the same age as my daughter (29), I have known her since she was 7, she has 2 young children - under 5. She was diagnosed at 24 - after the birth of her first child - she probably shouldn't have had the second. She does get money from the state. Some days she is not too bad and able to look after herself and the children and on other days she is bed bound and sometimes hospitalised - there is no way on this earth she could work - or rather no one on this earth would employ her. She would have so much time off it would be untrue - and as time goes on it will get worse. But on a good day she could go and be assessed as fit for work. Where do you draw the line.

The other is a man I have known for about 20 years - he has never worked as long as I have known him. He used to be like my daughters friend, good days and bad days - when he would be able to drive and walk unaided - now it is bad days and worse days. He is occasionally able to walk with sticks - but really is wheelchair bound. He would never pass an assessment for work - unless breathing is the only criteria.

My worry, like DSM is that the wrong people will be targeted. Fraudsters will more than likely be experts at these medicals. Genuine people probably aren't.

Fraudsters will more than likely be experts at these medicals. Genuine people probably aren't.

If someone has a genuine disability or ailment that prevents them from ever working, then they do not have anything to fear surely?. As if a disabled person is somehow worse at being disabled than a fraudster?

Are we suggesting that the examiners cannot tell the difference between a genuine one-legged man and a fraudster 'pretending' to have a limp?.

I think the people who need to fear these changes are the fraudsters (and their made up ailments such as 'stress' and 'back ache') and those who have the ability to work but choose to hide behind their lesser ailments in order to get a free ride.

Somewhat controversially, many disabled people CAN work but choose not to as the benefits pay better than working (just like ablke-bodied people abuse the system too) - society expects everyone who can work, to work and to support those who cannot work.
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.
