Yes. You can claim for up to 6 years if the microwave was inherently faulty (i.e. fault was caused by the manufacturer, not any misuse on your part). The best way to prove it is to have an engineer produce a report to say that the microwave had such a fault, and should have lasted longer.
Then contact the retailer with the report and they should arrange a repair (or if not possible, replace it). If neither is possible, they will refund you (though it's likely to be a partial refund as you have had 18 month's use already)Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
Right..ok, thanks for the info  much appreciated.

Nonononononononononono....no.........no. The EU provides for a two year period in which faulty goods can be returned for repair or replacement. English law provides 6 years in which to make the claim.
After the first six months from purchase, it is up to you to prove it was inherently faulty.
And as it's under 2 years, BOTH apply, which is exactly what the link explained!!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

oh dear
why cant people forget about this directive, erase it from all memory will you please
and concentrate on British law as last time i checked that is where we lived is it not?
stop telling people you have an automatic 2 year warranty as thats the biggest load of cr** and will completely discredit anybody making a complaint, if you take that to a company they will turn you around and most probably laugh at you.
to the op
read up on the sale of goods act on the net
google is your friend
section 14 in particular in regards to "e) Durability" and "of satisfactory quality"
write a letter stating this relevant law and that alone, no other acts
no eu drivel
just the sale of goods act
write to them abotu the issue and the potential hazards and danger it presented (to me glowing indicates sparks/fire, not something you would want if you had kids sleeping upstairs and you were in the toilet for example if you get me)
state that you would like a repair or replacement under soga (dont demand just one, say both) but i assume they will chose the latter as i imagine the microwave is a write off?
say you want a reply within 14 days with a suitable solution or else you will contact trading standards and begin small claims court proceedings.
make 3 copys of this letter, send 2 recorded delivery to head office and the store it was purchased from, keep the other for yourself
then twiddle your thumbs for two weeks
hope ive helped
if your still unsure log on to consumers direct (basically trading standards) and they will help you and even provide letter templates.
EDIT: before doing that, how much was the microwave as this will make alot of difference to the strength of your claim. SOGA only provides protection up to a time where a normal person would deem reasonable when taking into account usage, nature of product and price paid.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
Thank you hudsonj I will look into doing that.
My mum said the same thing thinking how much damage it could've done if she'd left it & hadn't been in the room or just nipped out for a bit while it had been overheating & not noticed in time!DFW Nerd 1038 - Debt 08/2008 £4068 - Debt Now £400Santander CC £400 [STRIKE]Tesco CC £622.69[/STRIKE] £0 :j2010 Wins:0 -
If there was a glowing red light, it sounds like the power unit was arcing to the inside case of the oven.
IF this is the case, then it is 100% inherently faulty.0 -
