Microwave smoked out parents kitchen! Only 18 months old

Hi
I wonder if anyone can help?
My parents bought a microwave from Comets 18 months ago
Mum was cooking a jacket potato in the microwave & while doing other things smelt burning, thinking it was the hob, turned round to see the inside of the microwave was bright red with smoke billowing out of it .
They took it back only to be told it was out of warranty & they couldn't do anything
They've taken the microwave into a shop which Panasonic told them to take for it to be tested to see if there's a manufacturers fault which I don't think they should've had to do as it was only 18 months old & clearly faulty?!
Has anyone any ideas what they should do now
. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What was glowing bright red? The spud or the microwave itself? Potatoes can catch fire in microwaves.
Doesn't everything notionally have a 2 year warranty under European Law?British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Hiya
No not the spud it was the inside of the microwaveDFW Nerd 1038 - Debt 08/2008 £4068 - Debt Now £400Santander CC £400 [STRIKE]Tesco CC £622.69[/STRIKE] £0 :j2010 Wins:0 -

Well from the jist of it it sounds like you don't want to use the microwave because of what happened yet you don't seem prepared to take it to get it checked.
I ain't got a clue how long the guarantee is on a microwave and yes I would expect it to last longer then 18 months but things do go wrong.
The reality is if you want it replacing then take it to the shop and get it tested I think Panasonic are being more then reasonable there.0 -

No, I was just under the impression that your contract was with the shop & not having to do it yourself. They've had no objections to having it tested & it was the shop (not Panasonic) who told them they couldn't do anything. Panasonic were contacted by my parents & have been far more helpful than the shop it was bought from.
I just wanted to know whether they could ask for it to be refunded by the shop as it's relatively new.DFW Nerd 1038 - Debt 08/2008 £4068 - Debt Now £400Santander CC £400 [STRIKE]Tesco CC £622.69[/STRIKE] £0 :j2010 Wins:0 -
Your contract is with COMET, and it's their responsibility to get it checked out! There is indeed an automatic 2 year warranty under EU law.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

Thanks for this pinkshoes, I thought I'd seen or heard somewhere that I was right I just wasn't too sure. I know that shops like to think most pps don't know what their rights are & play on it

Sorry but I hardly call 18 months relatively new that's well used in my eyes.
Either way pinkshoes is right in saying your contract is with Comet but as your finding out its like banging your head against a brick wall.
Sometimes is much easier and quicker just to cut out the middle man and go straight to the horses mouth as like you are finding they are being far more helpful then comet ever will be.
If you want a quick resolution then my advice would be to take it to the shop as Panasonic requested but if in no rush and fancy a fight then id keep on banging on comets door.0 -

Depends if you use it as an everyday cooker or the occassional spud I s'posewhich is all they use it for so to them not well used.
As I say, they will get the results but why should they be out of pocket on a faulty item. We'll see what happens.

After the first six months from purchase, it is up to you to prove it was inherently faulty.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
Nonononononononononono....no.........no. The EU provides for a two year period in which faulty goods can be returned for repair or replacement. English law provides 6 years in which to make the claim.

So they should wait for the outcome from where it's being tested & then go from there?DFW Nerd 1038 - Debt 08/2008 £4068 - Debt Now £400Santander CC £400 [STRIKE]Tesco CC £622.69[/STRIKE] £0 :j2010 Wins:0
