Hey guys

Just spent ages putting my brothers new PC together. Looks great.

Turned it on and it POSTed - great! Windows XP started loading up the basic files....then when it said starting starting Windows XP (the bit where it takes you to select the hard drive partition etc) it went to BSOD! With error 0XF78D2524. It does the same thing every time.

The motherboard is ASRock 4Core1600TwinsP35
Intel Quad core CPU
The HDD is Hitachi 1TB SATA
4GB RAM
ATI 4650 gfx

I tried the HDD in my PC and it loaded the XP files up fine, but it just refuses to work in this set up.

Any advice would be great as I am pulling my hair out!

Thanks for reading

Did you install the SATA drivers first before continuing with the XP install? XP doesn't have native SATA drivers.

F6 when prompted and insert floppy drive with the SATA drivers on.

Thanks for this. It is what I was thinking, but I built my new PC a month ago with the same type of HDD and same XP disc and it worked flawlessly? Is it just with some motherboards? I dont have a floppy drive - can you use USB?

    Thanks again mate

Never tried it without a floppy so not sure what would be possible. The main thing is the drivers which are chipset/motherboard specific. I don't know if some motherboards have a way of making it look to an initial installation like a normal working SCSI drive or something. I've never looked into it. But from experience I've always had to install SATA drivers for XP installations on my socket A Asus board. But if you've not tried it then that'd definitely be the next thing to attempt.

Did you just take the drive out of the old computer and plop it in the new one or did you format the drive and reinstall windows from scratch?

If you just swapped drives then what you need to do is a format and reinstall im afraid as basically windows has been setup to work on the older computer with all sorts of different components and when it boots up it expects to find them. However if you have swapped all your components windows go !!!!!! I don't recognise any of this and just crashes.

I had a similar issue with a PC i built recently, it kept blue screening during installation of windows despite having the SATA driver. In the end it was something to do with the version of XP i was using so i built a new XP disc with service pack 3 and used that and it worked fine. Just an idea if the SATA driver idea doesnt work for you.

You don't need sata drivers as they are in xp. You are not running raid and you have installed windows before without mucking about with floppy drives. I have installed xp many times onto sata drives and I don't have a floppy drive.
Maybe it is to do with your version of xp ?
Maybe it is to do with the bios settings for the hdd?
I had a problem once where the xp install wouldn't partition - but I can't atm recall the answer.
Is it a new board or refurb/used - have you ever had the board in a working system?

    Cheers for all the replies.

I just tried using a program that allows you to add your SATA drivers onto the XP CD by making a copy plus the driver, but it did the same thing.

This is what is puzzling me, I built my new PC and it was fine with the same disk and same HDD! This is a diff m/b though. I have never used this m/b before and it is brand new for the new build.

I am really pulling my hair out. I just tried a diff XP CD with SP3 and same thing. Argh!
