hi, just checked my inbox (the one registered to mse), and found this email from bestjobsuk community, mentioning 'sigma realty group', from michaeltaylor84@ymail.com
obviously spam, as it read 'dear jobseeker', rather than my name, so i googled and found this thread
my email addy is not unique to mse, and i do get some spam, however, this is the only spam email in 4/5 years that has made it through to my inbox, rather than just getting chucked into the junk folder, which i found strange, hence my googling to find out where its come from.....
i did notice the request earlier to send info to the techies, but i have no idea what all that esp/ domain stuff means
Yep I got the same & it made it into my hotmail inbox.
My email address isn't unique to Mse either so it is possible it was from a freebie or comp
Your esp is the name before the @ so lorweld@ would be mine and the domain name is hotmail/gmail/yahoo etc:hello:0 -

they should have just said 'email address' then, for the thickosWe cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. Carl Jung

Morning,
I know it's already been mentioned, but rather than posting your personal details here where everybody can see, could you please send an e-mail to: spamreport @moneysavingexpert.com with the following details: The date and e-mail address that received the spam, your Forum username and if you wouldn't mind, your email service provider (ESP) and registrar of your domain if it's a personal one.
This allows us to keep all the investigation emails together in one place, which makes our jobs easier. I have removed any posts with personal details to protect your privacy.0 -
At 18:57 today, I received a Spam email entitled "DHS Situational Awareness Note".
The problem is not the Spam, but the fact that it was sent to my MSE email address, which is unique and only used for this Forum. It is not easily guessed, so it looks like the Forum's email lists may have been compromised.
Happy to send an email header to any of the Site Team.. It's clearly Spam, but how the Spammer acquired my MSE email address is a cause for concern.
I know for certain that the email address concerned has never been used, nor disclosed to anyone other than MSE when I signed up. It is a unique address for receiving emails from this Forum and nowhere else...that's why I spotted the problem straight away.
If others have seen the same Spam, then please let the Site Team know.

OK, just seen this MSE Thread (apparently, I can't Post a link, so this is just the Thread's Title):
Has your MSE forum email address been spammed.
Looks like others have had the same problem.
There's little doubt that the MSE email lists have been compromised. Not good.0 -
From Martin there.....Insert By Martin
We would never, and have never sold any email addresses to any one. MSE doesn't data mine and our list is private and never given out (either forum or main email list).
Yet we have had reports from a few (see below) of peoples email that they used uniquely to register for the forum receiving similar spam. We're trying to track down what's happened.
So if its happened to you (specifically for emails you have NEVER used anywhere else, never posted on the forum, and only used to register in the forum) please would you email us at
spamreport @moneysavingexpert.com with the date and e-mail address that received the spam, your Forum username and if you wouldn't mind, your ESP and registrar of your domain if it's a personal one. So we can try and check it out.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

I've just started an MSE Thread on the same subject, then found this Thread.
Same has happened to me. I also create totally unique email addresses for all Forums, and created one for MSE when I registered. There is no way it has been guessed.
I regret from the Posts above, it does look like the MSE Forum has been compromised, and email addresses grabbed by a Spammer. Once they are on a Spam List, that, I regret, is that. The Spammers will pass that list around, and you will get Spam from that point onwards...
...hence the reason why I take such care to avoid Spam using the above techniques.
For what it is worth, the email I received only came in Today, and spotted it straight away as I get virtually no Spam at all. I checked the email header, and saw it was sent to the email address I have Registered with this Forum.
I would be happy to PM the Site Team a copy of that, but I'm not too keen to send anything to MSE via email, for perhaps obvious reasons.
Please do let us know when the issue has been sorted, and I will re-register a new email address, as the one being used now will be deleted.

Thanks Fermi.
Only slight problem...
...not too keen to send an email to MSE at the moment! Does the Site Team use PM or do abuse reports have to go in via email?

SORRY ABOUT THIS - I TRIED TO MERGE THE THREAD ABOUT MSE EMAILS WITH THE EXISTING ONE BUT DID IT WITH THE WRONG THREAD. SADLY I DONT KNOW HOW TO UNMERGE IT (NOT AS SIMPLE) SO ITS STUCK. HUGE APOLOGIES
As for emailing the MSE team - there is absolutely no problem (not that we think there is a problem with the forum email - but either way the MSE emails are on an entirely different server at an entirely different location.)Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert.
