I would always send an email.
If it was a weekend I would thank them for a payment and tell them I will post on Monday. On a week day I send an email the next morning just as I am about to post.
It lets them know when their goods will be dispatched and make for good communication.

Does the paypal postage not send an email if you use that? I have stopped emailing due to this....
Yeah it does, but from buying experience I can tell you it never sends the email until the label has passed it's expiry date (so 1 working day after it is printed.) We don't do any kind of communication, unless asked questions or special requests. We do post every day, so I don't see it mattering that much.
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

Well there is a star for communication, so I guess they'd mark just that one down.

So it seems you all send them yourselves, but rarely receive them after purchasing.

Personal experience in lots of ebay years is no more than 5 thanking me for my purchase and 1 earnest seller sending about 4 : 1thanking me, 1 telling me it was going to be dispatched, 1 telling me it was dispatched, 1 asking me to leave feedback. Think the item was a £1.99 mobile phone case...

I thought it was the rarity, not the norm.

Personally i don't email every customer to say, "payment received", then "item packed" and "item Sent" and if a seller did when i bought an item it would not improve my rating of him as all i care about is how long it takes to be delivered and the service they provide.

when i was selling in bulk as a business i did have the automated email set up via selling manager pro, as i think Stevew8975 mentioned, but now that i only sell the occasional item i don't bother, if someone wants to mark me down for it despite the fact i send everything i sell out either same day or next day then let them get on with it, sad B@$T@rds!

Yes because there is a DSR for communication. If I have had none I'm not going to say it was fantastic am I. Thats what the DSRs are for.
• I have a paypal one auto generated with tracking details entered and I send a generic one via contact buyer as soon as I've bagged up to go.

I e-mail to say thanks for purchase and payment and when the item will be sent out. I also say to contact me if there are any problems and I'll do my best to help. If I remember then I sometimes e-mail them again to say that the item is on it's way.

Apparently it does but I'm not sure how many people use paypal postage. Firstly you can only have 1st class, so no chance of 2nd class and secondly you still have to queue up at the Post office for COPs anyway . Having said that I used it twice today as I sold two items about an hour ago and both are small enough to fit in a post box and are cheap enough I couldn't be bothered to go to the PO again.

Thanks for this. I do wonder if it does though as just had a chaser email from an item I paid for via Paypal postage on Saturday. Maybe no email was sent?!

I have sent a couple via this as am short of funds at the mo so it is easier just to be able to pay for the postage directly.
