OOhh yes, I'd forgotten about the plates. We had some when I was a teen at home, my mum had them for ever! She used to put my dad's dinner on one , put another Pyrex plate on top and keep it warm in a low oven, if he was working late!! I can picture them now, sort of milky white opaque with a bluey grey geometric pattern round the rim!
Must look out for some for everyday casual use. Sick of buying everyday crockery that chips and cracks so quickly. Had some nice cream stuff from Tesco recently, which has been absolute rubbish!

EDIT to say. Just like this!!

we had those plates, I once saw some in a charity shop and was itching to buy them but I still lived at home so didn't think my mum would give them house room.

And pyrex clear mixing bowls are sooo useful, they never seem to crack (unlike my cream and white traditional ones) and you can stand them for as long as you like over a pan of boiling water so it pretty well makes a double boiler
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Another pyrex fan here. I picked up a lovely pink with white snowflakes rectangular dish with a lid and a stand that holds a couple of tealights on ebay a couple of years ago. It was still in its original box. It gets used regularly for lasagne.

I also have a couple of casserole dishes, a souffle dish and a pie dish that I've had for many years.

I used to have pyrex until I broke a casserole dish in a rather spectacular fashion. Now I won't have it in the kitchen. I still have the scars. :(

Me too. I was 16 and washing up a Pyrex mixing bowl (the brown ones) when the cat sprang up to the sink and made me jump, clumping the bowl against the tap. It's an interesting sensation to look at the inside workings of your hand whilst shards of Pyrex peel the layers back for you..._pale__pale__pale_

I was out of the house, across the street and at my mum's best friend's door before it started to bleed.

Eight hours later, the hand surgeon told me it had been a close run thing, and was it OK for to tell my mum, as he had been operating on her that morning when I cut my hand. I said yes, and he escorted me to the private room he had sneaked her into, so she didn't find out I was there as an emergency. I then got told off for breaking her precious mixing bowl.:huh:

My DDs have been ordered to never touch the blessed things as a result.

These were the ones my nan and gradad had when i was growing up -

and for the past couple of years i've been wanting to find some - i keep a lookout in the charity shops etc, and they always have something similar, but never the exact same ones.
We have them at our church - in our very mixed selection of plates.

I couldn't agree more. It's the original and best. And it's still available at very MSE prices from time to time in places like Matalan and BeWise, etc. It was also regularly available in Woolworths.

My 500ml measuring jug (no kitchen is complete without one, IMHO) and 1 litre bowl are in almost daily use. The potato salad I made on Sunday and had the last of for dinner tonight was in the bowl.

PS. It's also got a 10 year guarantee, so scan your receipts as the heat printed ones fade over time! Doesn't help if you got them from Woolies, though.

I bought a clear oval dish for 50p in 1990 in Oxfam when I first met my husband. It is in constant use as both for hot dishes [tonight it had our tuna bake in it] and for cold dishes [jelly is a regular one] They might not look glam but they're fabulouly useful. If you have got one that's got a slight chip in it [in a place where food doesn't come into direct contact with it] you can smooth off the rough edges with one of those files that you use for chips in glasses I would imagine

I grew up eating on these and my mum still has them! They've been used everyday for 42 years! That photo brought a smile to my face!

I didn't realise pyrex went out of fashion :o
Mum's always had it and I couldn't do without it!
Haven't seen the plates though
Vitrous enamel baking tins/trays are also a lot better than non-stick stuff but it's hard to come by.

I suppose it went out of fashion in the sense that the the patterned Pyrex (as opposed to the timeless plain glass pieces) was stuck very much in it's era...the aforementioned geometric patterns (now retro!) and some of the floral motifs that were very 1970's. Many people like me, who were a younger age group then, saw these designs as belonging to their parent's generation. I certainly was looking for something more modern, once funds permitted.

However, the "full circle" bit in the title refers to ME going full circle in my thinking!!

I'm not totally sure, but dredging up some more memories now, I think Pyrex also made an excellent 'Add and Weigh' scale, which was a big square brown and caramel coloured base with a Pyrex mixing bowl on the top. It was fab, as it was big enough to do your cake mixing in. My mum had one and there was also one of those on my wedding list!! Anyone else have one? I'm sure it was made by Pyrex!
    Anyone still using one?!
