Back in 1980, when I first set up home, sets of Pyrex dishes featured heavily as wedding gifts!

Over the years, I gradually abandoned/smashed/left at school fetes/lent and never got back most of my collection, in favour of more up-to-date attractive supposed oven-to-table styles, most of which chipped, cracked and crazed quickly in the heat of the oven and general day-to-day life.

Now, again in need of buying some new oven dishes, I find myself looking at Pyrex and coveting it in a nostalgic, credit crunch recessionista kind of way.

Plain and simple, Pyrex does the job. The casseroles had lids (which could also be used as shallow dishes, easy to clean, craze-proof, not too heavy, multitude of shapes and sizes etc.

Plus, it's readily available in the same designs at 1980's prices or less in the charity shops.

So often, the way forward is the way back, IYKWIM!

A pyrex plate is also really useful - for teacle tart and warming things up in the microwave or on top of a pan of boiling water etc etc
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

You are never disappointed with Pyrex.
It always does what it says.

I got rectangle dishes years ago, with plastic lids, that meant it could be used for fridge/freezer. They were a bargain in Woolworths.
They are still going strong :D

I know Pyrex was all the rage years ago, but I dont think they ever go out of fashion :T

I like pyrex. I mainly have the cassaroles, I but I also have a selection of large and small plates which I use all the time in the kitchen. I would like the rectangle dishes with lids (as mentioned by nopot2pin) but I currently have no room.

OOhh yes, I'd forgotten about the plates. We had some when I was a teen at home, my mum had them for ever! She used to put my dad's dinner on one , put another Pyrex plate on top and keep it warm in a low oven, if he was working late!! I can picture them now, sort of milky white opaque with a bluey grey geometric pattern round the rim!
Must look out for some for everyday casual use. Sick of buying everyday crockery that chips and cracks so quickly. Had some nice cream stuff from Tesco recently, which has been absolute rubbish!

EDIT to say. Just like this!!

Ours had orange & yellow pattern - leaves I think.....we also had a few odd bits from the test kitchen as my dad used to work for the company that made it in Newcastle (many years ago now). It is almost indestructible - but I managed to shatter a casserole dish by dropping it onto a quarry tiled floor about 12 years ago!

I used to have pyrex until I broke a casserole dish in a rather spectacular fashion. Now I won't have it in the kitchen. I still have the scars. :(

I didn't realise pyrex went out of fashion :o
Mum's always had it and I couldn't do without it!
Haven't seen the plates though
Vitrous enamel baking tins/trays are also a lot better than non-stick stuff but it's hard to come by.
