Replacing Fiat Punto Engine
Hi,
I had a problem with my Fiat punto(year 2000 model) over the weekend. It was overheated and smoke was coming out of the vehicle and I have to tow the car to the garage.
My mechanic has identified that there is a hole in the piston and he is advising that finding a cheap engine and fitting it would be the best solution. I'm not very familiar with the process. So would be grateful if you can assist if it is a good solution.
I'm also not that happy spending more money on a old car. It has run 46000miles and I estimate to sell around 1200-1400£. So spending 500-600£ for engine with labour and I'm not sure everything will be fine later. Is it worth spending that amount of money? Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

can you buy a suitable replacement for £600
If the engine comes with some sort of warranty i would swap it0 -
My mechanic is going to search on the net and let me know the price tomorrow. Do we get a warranty for second hand engines? Can you recommand any websites for buying used engines?

get shut and fast. I had a fiat punto (2000 model) last year which I replaced with a ford focus(07plate) when I had my daughter in May. I had replaced everything on the car in 3 years apart from the gear box and power steering. head gasket was first to go, then exhaust, then clutch then engine. I would never have another fiat ever again in my life not even given. save your 600 and put it towards another car if you can i doubt you would get over £1000 for it mine was in good nik and i couldnt get more than £950 when i tried to sell it in the end when we decided to get rid power steering was going and we got £400 for it part exchange which I was happy with I would have left it regardless.0

My Punto is a couple of years newer than yours and the most I got offered for it part-ex and with nearly a years MOT was £1100 ( it's the basic 5 door model). I've also had a couple of rather pricey electrical faults in the last year or so incl £400 on the engine management system which I believe is quite a common problem on them, so be careful you're not spending a large wedge of money on a dying car which might only last a few more months anyway.0

Get rid of it and buy a proper car.;)0

Thanks for the replies.
If I go with the decision of scrapping the car, will I get any money out of the old car as the car currently is not in a runnable stage?0 -
What engine is in it?0

Well roughly, even if it costs £200 to £300 for the engine, and the same for fitting, you'll have a £1000 car to sell. So that's £400 to £600 in the bank. If you scrap it you'll get a £100 to £200 if you're lucky.0

Hi,
I got a better deal than my mechanic on the engine, I got one for £175. Mechanic has given me a quote of £550(incl VAT) for stripping the engine and putting the new engine and replacing the oil & filters. I felt they are expensive.
Can you advise whether the price sounds reasonable to you?
