Nokia 3500 won't play MP3 ringtones

I'm travelling around Canada at the moment, on my way to the UK. I brought a Nokia 3500 from Fido, and have since paid $40 Canadian to unlock it, so I could use my Roger's sim card. Not realising that to get my phone to to play my MP3's as ringtones I would then have to pay even more money! What the?! The phone was one of the cheaper options in the first place, and now I'm paying almost more in unlocking/debranding...
So I thought I'd see if I could do it myself. I have a Mac, which made life a little harder. I managed to download the appropriate software to enable Windows XP to run on my Mac through Parallels. I installed NSS, Nokia PC Suite and TNT Enforcer. I found a product code (0549088). But when I tried to update my phone's software I got a warning saying that my mobile service provider, operator or carrier may not have approved the lastest Nokia device firmware. (5.51 firmware)
So after all this effort, I still can't play MP3's as ringtones... is there a solution? I'm beginning to feel a little defeated.
