It may be cheaper to add them to the policy than to add them for a day/week. Worth asking your insurance provider.

i dont want to add them to the policy because they will only be driving a short 20 minute round trip for one afternoon

Tell the insurance company that. Quite often it's entirely free to add someone as a named driver on the policy. Have you asked?

Even when I was 17 I used to occasionally get put on my Dad's policy for weekend trips and that only cost a tenner a go.

It's the cost of a phone call (or if they have 0800 not even that :p)

I'd agree with what's been said here. Firstly :

" If your friend has full comprehensive insurance on their car, then they automatically have 3rd party insurance to drive any other vehicle that they have a license to drive."

Not 100% true, but well worth getting him to check his insurance as Fully Comp insurance very often DOES cover you to drive another car third party. It used to be pretty much standard ( i.e. nearly all policies covered you TP on another car ), these days more and more companies are excluding this cover, but it'll be clearly stated on his policy.

If not, then phone your insurance company and ask them. It'll depend very much on his "risk assessment" ( e.g if he's 17 years old with 3 claims then they may refuse completely, if he's 40 years old with a clean slate then it'll be peanuts ). I did exactly this for my friend recently. Cost £10 to add him for a week. But just phone your insurance and ask - make sure you're honest when giving them his details, history etc. !
