insuring for a friend

i want to take my car to a show this weekend but in know i'll be legally unable to drive, and that the other named driver on my policy will be unavailable. what is the law on a friend who is not on the policy driving the car for a short distance for one day? some people i have asked have said that it is not legal to drive a car you are not insured on, but others have said that you can drive someones car if you are fully comprehensively covered and that you (the driver) and the owner both agree that you the driver can take the car.

does anyone know for sure because neither i nor my friends want to end up with being charged over insurance related driving offences

A lot of insurers let you drive another vehicle (that isn't owned by you) but only cover you 3 party. However some don't, so your friend will have to check their policy or call their insurer to find out if they'll be covered.

    what about day insurance?

    what's that likely to cost?

also i might add that the vehicle in question is an old series land rover which i found it difficult to get insurance for being a new driver, my friend is also a new driver so presumably day insurance would be difficult/expensive for him as well? would the vehicle also have an impact on his fully comp insurance covering him to drive it, even if it is only 3rd party? ( i dont mind about the type of cover as long as it is covered, its only a 10 minute trip so the chances of disaster requiring tpft or fc are very remote)

google dayinsure or other day insurance companies,im sure they could answer your questions.

  • If your friend has full comprehensive insurance on their car, then they automatically have 3rd party insurance to drive any other vehicle that they have a license to drive.

So, as long as their license allows them to drive your Landrover, they can legally drive it. If they have an accident, any damage to your Landrover will not be covered.

thanks a lot guys, ill get him to check and see that his policy is definately fully comp, if not ill try google dayinsure. im not really bothered about it only being third party cover as in the unlikely event of an accident the land rover's going to come off best anyway!

This is NOT always true! Please be very careful and check. Drivers under 25 and drivers with limited driving experience are very seldom granted 3rd party on other vehicles. The only way to be sure is to check the actual certificate of insurance which will say if you are covered. If it doesn't say, you are not covered.

Expect to pay around £30 to add your friend to your policy for 24 hrs.

Why don't you add them as a driver on the policy already covering the landrover

Why not add them as a named driver too? Most policies will allow two named drivers.
