o2 credit checks

Does anyone know how o2 do their credit checks? Is it a credit score?
I tried to buy an Iphone tonight and was shocked when the system said it wanted an additional £100 from me. I've just looked up my free credit report from Equifax and aside from one missed payment on my credit card in 2004 (which i dont even remember) I'm totally clean. I've virtually no debts aside from £1k on another credit card which i incurred this month due to a business trip and earn a very good salary.
The only thing I can think of is perhaps my ex !!!!!!ed things up as she is/was an O2 customer and about 6 months after she moved out I got a letter from them saying she'd missed a payment.
Does anyone know if O2 will tell me why? The customer advisor in the shop couldn't.
Thanks in advance

A late payment shouldn't affect your score. A missed payment can. They stay on the report for 6 years, so yours might have a year to run until it is totally clean.
The days of easy credit are now gone and the lenders are looking for the tiniest little thing that might affect your rating. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
o2 can't tell you why it was declined- they only get the decision when they put the credit check through. you can get a copy of your credit file from equifax (this is who o2 use) and maybe that will shed some light on it for youThe only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about - Oscar Wilde:beer:

Where you buying from a 3rd party?...i was an O2 customer for 6 yrs and paid regulary by direct debit all that time missed maybe 2 payments.
Wanted to cancel contract and get new phone and contract through mobile.co.uk a lot cheaper than O2 direct where offering, and they wanted a £150 deposit !!
Stuff em.... went to Orange got an even better deal and no deposit!!0 -
i didnt think they scored that harshly!!!
I had 3 late payments, 2 months of arrangements to pay and maxed out credit card at the time I applied and i still got a contract!!
The markers were put on within 6 months of applying for the o2 contract
I dunno, maybe they were desperate for business when i applied, lol'Sometimes you just need to keep your mouth shut':j0 -
i have 1 contract with o2 but i tried to get another on for my son (who is under 18)and they turned me down i dont know why as my credit score was good0

Spoke to a friend of mine who works for Vodafone and he says that the deposit thing is a fairly common thing for someone with no history of owning a mobile phone.
I do have one but its a company phone and I've had it for 8 years so guess thats probably why they are asking for a deposit. Guess I'm not as insulted now!0 -
I had the exact same trouble at Vodafone.
I could not get credit for a contract phone as I failed their credit check. I contacted the credit company they use (Experia) and I have an excellent credit history 999 out of 1000.
The only thing I could think of was I was getting a phone on their lowest tariff and I had moved house within the last 6 months
Bought a car a week after and a new kitchen with no credit issues.
Their loss!0 -
Are you sure it was a deposit and not the handset they were charging you for? iPhones are only free on the more expensive plans.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

I failed o2's credit check too and my credit report is squeaky clean. CS couldn't tell why I failed but I realised when I got a confirmation e-mail. My DOB was wrong. Sometimes it just takes a small error to get refused credit.0

I have also just failed an o2 credit check and had to pay a £100 deposit before they would consider me (I will apparantly get it back after I have paid my third monthly bill). I failed it because they could not find proof of residence. I have lived at my present address for 3 years and have been on the electoral register all that time, but the bloke said that they couldn't find any evidence of that. I said I could supply three years worth of council tax receipts, but that apparantly won't help as there is no system in place to deal with things like that.0
