Currys won't take my old washing machine

This is resolved now but I thought I'd share the story in the hope that people can check what's happening.

Ordered a washing machine from Currys Gateshead on Saturday. Said it could be delievered the next day for £19.99, yep, I'll have that. And do you want your old machine taken way? Yes please.

So far so good. The delivery arrives as expected. And I point out the old machine to the delivery man.

"Oh, sorry, it's not booked in"
"But I need it taken away, I haven't got any way of getting rid of it!"
"Nothing I can do, you'll have to talk to the shop"

So I call Currys.
"Sorry we can't do anything about it now, it wasn't booked in!"

I specifically asked the saleman to arrange to have the old applicance taken away. Fair enough he didn't put it down, mistakes happen, it's how you deal with them that matters, but in this Currys completely failed, you'd expect them having made a mistake, to put it right, but no, they wouldn't budge.

In the end I got my £19.99 delivery charge refunded, and I'm getting the council to take the machine away for £10, so I'm up financially, but I'm not likely to trust Currys again.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I guess from now on, it's highly recommended that before leaving the store, you get something in writing to confirm all parts of the contract.

Admittedly, the last white goods item I bought, the removal of the old one was listed separately as 'recycling'. Gives another item to badger the delivery staff with, and the store into possibly agreeing that ok, they can actually take the item away.

    Caveat emptor.

Yes, this is something that needs a bit of work. As a rule, the drivers do not go out to collect scrap appliances if it failed the first time, and we have to be really nice to the delivery centre in the hope they may do it "just this once".

The salesman made a mistake, which he shouldn't have done, but it takes a few seconds to check your receipt and the mistake could have been rectified. We try not to make mistakes, but it still happens....

Yes, as I say the salesman made a mistake. It happens, that's life. However if a member of their staff makes a mistake it's up to them to put it right. Not me!

They asked me if I wanted the item removed, I said yes. As far as I'm concerned that's the end of it. It's not my job to make sure they are doing their job properly. And ultimately it's up to them to fix it if they haven't.

Instead all we've got is "There's no evidence of that", "There's nothing we can do".

I believe that to be an extremely shoddy attitude from Curry's. That tells me that not only do they not care about their customers, they actively despise them.

If you're very nice (and they are too), see if they'll cover the cost of a van hire to take the old one back to the store. This has been done on a couple of occasions

Not yet they haven't. I didn't have the full details of the call yesterday. But my other half was told that we'd have to come into the store and then they would refund the delivery.

As she said, what's the betting they deny having said any such thing?

Depending on what they're like there, you'll probably find they are OK. It'd be better if you had the name of who you spoke to in store though.

Or alternatively, talk to the salesperson who served you initially.

Just got a text to say Currys have refunded us the £19.99 delivery charge. So at least it's all sorted now.
