Student Broadband: Who are you with and are they any good?

I have mobile broadband from Three, £15 for 15GB which is more than enough unless you want to watch BBC iPlayer or do online gaming. I chose it as it was more flexible (and cheaper!) than committing to a fixed line for 18 months. You can network it, but I would imagine it would be fairly slow in a large student house.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

O2 also uses a BT line (ADSL) so you should encounter the same problem of decreasing speed the further from the exchange you are. Incidentally you can find how far you are from your nearest exchange here.
Indeed but I have also found that O2 bump it up to what you need, whereas Sky and BT don't. Either that or my friend lives next to the exchange!0 -
I'm with virgin at the moment, and as you say they're ok.
I'll probably be using them again this year in my new house. We don't want to install a phone line as we'd never use it. Also one of my house mates will pretty much download the internet every day we suspect so we don't want to risk any service that'll restrict our connection.
Plus the cash-back looks pretty nice:cool:0 -
Run a search for your postcode on http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php and see which providers have LLU services for your house. What this means is that they have installed their own computery stuff in the telephone exchange which will allow them to offer you a cheaper package than their competitors (also usually a faser connection aswell!).
If o2 have LLU services in your area then they offer a very good service, with great download speeds and for a very reasonable price, if your going to be using the internet for alot of downloading then i'd go with them. If you just want it as cheap as possible try tiscali. Tiscali have a bad reputation from the past but recently theyve been pulling their act together, you wont get amazing connection speeds but it should still be ok for you unless your a hardcore downloader, if your exchange is tiscali LLU'd then they only charge £14.99 a month INCLUDING line rental! (theres £60 from quidco available as well)0 -
Thank you for your advice everyone! I've gone with O2 now and it's all good so far so I hope it all works out...
I found another guide on student broadband quite helpful if anyone's still looking it's the student guide to broadband 2009 at chooseisp.co.uk.0 -
Don't want to particularly drag this thread on anymore but this news article came up...

O2 and VM are the best, which are the ones I said. And BT is one of the worst, which is one I said stay away from.0
