Hi -
Just wanted to get some opinions on student broadband before I move into a new shared house in a couple of months. I'm currently with Virgin Media and they're ok but I'm moving a bit further out so I don't know if I'll be able to stay with them...
Who are you guys with and are they any good? Horror stories/advice on angels much appreciated!
Thanks x x

Yep O2 or Virgin.
Not BT or Sky or Orange.0 -
We were TalkTalk in my first student house, who despite saying they'd tell us if there were any problems with our connection didn't, because we didn't have a phone line, but after that were very good.
In my second student house we were with O2, which we got cheap because I'm with them for my phone, and we had no problems - quick and easy setup, service worked fine and easy enough (if quite expensive) to cancel. Before I moved in my housemates were with Tiscali who were cheaper than O2 if none of us had had an O2 phone, and apart from not letting us change the name on the account they seemed to be OK."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
We have O2 Broadband. Managed to get it with a 3 months free deal, and i'm an O2 customer so it works out at only £4.89 per month. Was some difficulty with the connection which was due to the BT line, but O2 figured that out really quickly and made sure it was sorted. So far, so good.Student MoneySaving Club member 0210

They use the same as BT so if you are not near the exchange you get slow internet, which is one think I do not accept as a Computing student!0

o2 is seriously good. we have it in our flat and our neighbour upstairs also uses it!! just as quick connection and doesngt affect us.0

I had BT broadband in my first year who were absolutely terrible, slow speeds or it just didn't work at all, ended up using the wifi in the local pub instead
Be broadband for my second year, much better, never went down and low ping for online gaming - even with 5 other people downloading at the same time. cheaper than BT too!0 -
IDnet are awesome. They're not cheap (cheapest is £14.67/month, I think) but they are very good at customer service. You can actually phone them up and talk to a real person in this country who can actually do something about the problem you're having (on the rare occasion there's a problem). So far every time I talked to/emailed them I've ended up speaking to the same guy.
As a student, having a reliable internet connection can be pretty damn important, especially f you don't live 5 mins from the library.:coffee:Coffee +3 Dexterity +3 Willpower -1 Ability to Sleep
Playing too many computer games may be bad for your attention span but it Critical Hit!0 -

O2 also uses a BT line (ADSL) so you should encounter the same problem of decreasing speed the further from the exchange you are. Incidentally you can find how far you are from your nearest exchange here.0
