Regardless of law, it would be advisable to have some form of training.

I have a full car licence from the 80's when I passed, that gives me a moped licence as well, up to 50cc, and limited to 30mph, unless the moped was built before whatever date the restriction came in on. Older mopeds can exceed 30mph, only new ones have to be restricted. It is Cat P on my licence, and full not provisional.

Thanks davetrousers, I had been on that site this morning before I asked on here and couldn't find anything about CBT or different rules applying for licenses that had been issued after a certain date, followed your link but still none the wiser.

With a full car licence obtained before 2001 you can ride a moped without L's and with a passenger. Or you can do a CBT and ride up to a 125 with L plates, no passengers, and the CBT needs renewed every 2 years.
CBT stands for Compulsary Basic Training, it is not a "test", you either complete the course or you don't. It costs around £80-£120 and lasts for most of the day (I should know I've done 3 of them..)
As Dave says though, training is a good thing.

Just received this from the DVLA, very quick response from them, I am quite impressed:

Since January 1997 all learner moped or motorcycle riders irrespective of when a licence was issued must have completed a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course before riding a moped or motorcycle. When you successfully complete CBT you will get a Certificate of Completion (DL196).

Certificates issued since 1 February 2001 are valid for 2 years.

The requirement to complete CBT does not apply to those riders who are:

    (a) learning to ride a motorcycle who have already obtained full moped entitlement as a result of passing a moped test on or after 1 December 1990, or

    (b) riding a moped with full entitlement given automatically with a full car licence.

If a car driving test is passed after 1st February 2001 a CBT course must be taken before riding a moped on the road unless a full motorcycle or moped licence is already held. If a full car licence or if a car test was passed before 1st February 2001 a CBT course is not required before riding a moped but is encouraged.

So that clears that up then, thanks to everyone for all the help:)
